Rumors: Cavs, Collin Sexton having standoff on contract extension talks; Explosive guard believes proposed deal ‘way less’ on what he wanted

Both Collin Sexton and the Cleveland Cavaliers seem to be having an ongoing standoff in discussing extended years of partnership this summer.

Reporting recently in his Wine and Gold podcast, insider Chris Fedor has noted that the Cavs have already pitched an offer on Sexton, which the club believes as a justifiable one. Based on his sources, the contract costs near around $40 million in total, wherein Fedor hypothesized that it could be on a three-season basis.

As a response, the camp of Sexton insists that the proposal is way less on what they wanted, but Cleveland remains convinced of their provision on the explosive guard.

“I’m told that it is close to $40 million in total money. So think of like a three-year, $40 million deal.”

“It’s way less than what Collin initially wanted. I don’t know that it’s the kind of deal that that Collin and his camp would be willing to take.”

“So they’re sitting here saying, hey, look, we’ve given you what we consider a reasonable multi-year offer. If you’re interested in it, it’s yours. If you’re not interested in it, then go find one that’s better.”

As the league goes deeper this 2022 offseason, Sexton still stands as one of the top free agents remaining in the open market.

He only played in 11 games last season after succumbing from a torn meniscus injury in his right knee, averaging career-lows in points (16.0), assists (2.1) and minutes played (28.7) – which could have literally affected his value as a restricted one. 

But the fact that Darius Garland penned a lucrative five-year, $193 million deal with the Cavs says a lot about Sexton’s current clamor to earn a much bigger paycheck. Notably last season, the former Alabama star sought a $100MM bag for four years, which the team didn’t provide after all.

As such, these two sides will eventually find a resolution in solving this case. The Cavs continue to construct themselves as a team of the future – they may either regain Sexton or at least utilize him as a trading chip to gain impactful assets from several suitors.
