Berlin (dpa/d.de) – Trade and commerce links between Ukraine and Germany are expanding – and Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is calling on German businesses to get involved in the war-torn country. “If you invest in Ukraine today and in the coming years, you’re investing in a future EU member state,” said Scholz at the German-Ukrainian Economic Forum in Berlin.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal called for even closer cooperation in the areas of digital technologies, agriculture, defence and energy. Some 2,000 German companies operate in Ukraine – and none of them have left the country since the start of the war.
Scholz predicted excellent “growth rates and development opportunities” for the time after the war in Ukraine, saying that many German companies were “planning additional investments. They’re helping to rebuild the country,” said the Federal Chancellor. German-Ukrainian trade reached a record level of more than twelve billion euros this year.
Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck said that despite the war, Ukraine was making great progress with reforms on the way to EU membership .
