Iran’s chief negotiator has said he does not trust the Americans as he prepares for peace talks.
Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf told reporters he was conscious of the US attacks on Iran during previous negotiations.
“Twice within less than a year, in the middle of negotiations, and despite the Iranian side’s good faith, they attacked us and committed numerous war crimes,” he was quoted as saying.
“We have goodwill, but we do not have trust.”
But two key conditions Iran has set for negotiations to even take place is in jeopardy.
“Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets prior to the commencement of negotiations,” he said.
“These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin.”
Bloodshed continues in Lebanon, where Hezbollah and Israel are exchanging fire today.
Hezbollah has claimed to have conducted a drone strike on Israeli soldiers in Lebanon.
Lebanon has said 1900 people have been killed by Israeli strikes since the war began in February.
Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun said his government and Israel had agreed to peace talks starting on Tuesday.
