Singapore’s PM names semiconductors as the sector gaining most from AI demand, and confirms an economic strategy review is reshaping industry and trade policy.
Singapore Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong identified the semiconductor sector as a direct beneficiary of AI-driven demand in his National Day Message on 8 August, and confirmed that a completed review of the country’s economic strategies is now feeding into a revised approach to industry and trade across the Southeast Asian city-state.
The message, recorded at the National Stadium and telecast nationally, set out the government’s position on growth, technology adoption and supply chain pressure ahead of the National Day Rally, where further detail on policy measures is expected.

Growth Against A Disrupted Trade Backdrop
Wong said the economy had held up in the first half of the year, with growth strong and momentum expected to continue, and described the labour market as stable with new jobs still being created. He attributed part of that performance to rapid AI expansion, singling out semiconductors as the sector benefiting most directly.
That assessment was set against what he characterised as a more uncertain global environment, with conflicts spreading, trade barriers rising and cooperation between nations less dependable than before. He pointed to the crisis in the Middle East as the most immediate transmission channel, citing higher energy prices, disrupted supply chains and increased costs for households and businesses. The situation there, he said, remains volatile.
The government has introduced a further package of measures to help households and businesses manage the continued uncertainty, following earlier support announced when the crisis began.
Economic Strategy Review Feeds Industry Policy
Singapore completed a comprehensive review of its economic strategies earlier in 2026. Wong said the government is building on that work by refreshing its approach to industry and trade, strengthening competitiveness and increasing investment in the workforce. The stated goal is not simply to weather current turbulence but to emerge stronger and better positioned.
On automation and AI, Wong drew a distinction between adoption and uncritical adoption, saying Singapore would take up new technology on its own terms. He committed to making full use of AI to raise productivity and create better jobs, paired with investment in skills and training so workers can adapt. He acknowledged that AI is already reshaping industries and is causing anxiety among workers about their livelihoods.
Longer-term commitments included strengthening energy security, optimising limited land and investing in infrastructure — three constraints that bear directly on manufacturing capacity planning in Singapore.
