Somoco Ghana Limited, the sole authorised distributor of Bajaj Automobiles in Ghana, has launched its 2026 ‘Safe Journey’ Road Safety Campaign to promote responsible riding and safer road use across the country.
The campaign, being implemented in partnership with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Police Service, will run until December 2026.
It will focus particularly on motorcycle and tricycle users, with activities including rider education, road-safety awareness, training and licensing support, as well as the promotion of helmets and other protective equipment.
Speaking at the launch in Accra, the Managing Director of Somoco Ghana Limited, Nii Ayi Hyde, said the company’s responsibility as a major mobility provider went beyond supplying motorcycles and tricycles.
He said road safety was an integral part of the customer journey and should begin from the point of purchase and continue onto the road.
“Road safety must form part of the entire customer journey, from the showroom to the road,” he said, stressing Somoco’s commitment to building a culture in which mobility and safety went hand in hand.
Mr Hyde said the campaign would support practical interventions, including rider training, licensing assistance, safety education at the point of sale and the promotion of helmets and protective gear.
He called on riders, dealers, partners and the general public to take personal responsibility for their actions and contribute to reducing road crashes.
The Head of Marketing at Somoco Ghana, Jerry Aye, noted that the company’s objective was to make safer choices easier for riders and encourage safety practices that would continue beyond the campaign period.
The Director-General of the NRSA, Abraham Amabila, commended Somoco for taking the initiative to support road-safety efforts, describing the campaign as an important strategic road-safety education intervention.
He said road safety was a shared national responsibility and urged other corporate organisations to support initiatives aimed at reducing road crashes and improving road-user behaviour.
The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, also addressed the gathering, highlighting developments regarding the regulation and legalisation of commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as Okada.
He underscored the need for such operations to be conducted within an appropriate regulatory framework to ensure safety and compliance.
A key component of the campaign is the DVLA-certified Somoco Riding Academy, which will provide rider training and licensing support, particularly for commercial motorcycle riders.
The launch brought together representatives from the NRSA, DVLA, Ministry of Transport and Ghana Police Service, as well as transport operators, motorcycle riders, ride-hailing partners and members of the media.
As part of its commitment to road safety, Somoco Ghana donated a brand-new Bajaj Boxer 125 HD motorcycle to the NRSA to support the Authority’s road-safety activities.
The ‘Safe Journey 2026’ campaign will continue across Ghana until December, with activities centred on rider education, safety awareness, training and licensing support, equipment promotion and responsible road-user behaviour.
Somoco Ghana Limited is the sole authorised distributor of Bajaj products in Ghana, including the Bajaj Boxer motorcycle range, Bajaj RE and Bajaj Qute.
