Isar Aerospace’s second flight opens a new commercial launch route from mainland Europe

A German-built Spectrum rocket has reached orbit from northern Norway and deployed its first payloads, marking a significant advance for Europe’s commercial space industry. The achievement widens the continent’s launch options, although Isar Aerospace must still demonstrate that it can repeat the flight reliably and move from qualification missions to routine service.

A decisive second flight

Spectrum lifted off from Isar Aerospace’s dedicated launch complex at Andøya Spaceport at 22:12 CEST on Saturday. The two-stage rocket passed through maximum aerodynamic pressure, completed main-engine shutdown and stage separation, and ignited its second stage before reaching orbital velocity.

After a circularisation burn, the vehicle completed spacecraft separation. Isar Aerospace said it was working with customers to confirm the condition of the individual satellites, an important distinction between successful deployment and verified operation of every spacecraft.

The flight, named “Onward and Upward”, is being described as the first time a privately developed rocket has reached orbit from continental European territory. Isar Aerospace also said it had become the first European commercial space company to deliver satellites into orbit.

That description requires geographical context. Europe has decades of orbital-launch experience through Ariane and Vega missions from the European spaceport in French Guiana, which is part of France but lies in South America. Spectrum’s distinction is its privately developed vehicle and departure from mainland Europe.

Five satellites and an experiment

The qualification mission carried five small CubeSats and one attached technology experiment. The payloads combine commercial research with educational projects intended to give European students practical experience in designing and operating space hardware.

They were selected through the German Space Agency at DLR’s Microlauncher Competition. The programme is funded through the European Space Agency’s Boost! initiative, which has provided co-financing for emerging European launch services and helped support Spectrum’s flight and production expansion.

According to the European Space Agency’s mission profile, Spectrum stands 28 metres high, measures two metres in diameter and uses ten engines across its two stages. It is designed to carry payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit.

The success follows a much shorter inaugural flight in March 2025. That mission ended approximately 30 seconds after launch when the vehicle lost attitude control and descended into the sea. Isar Aerospace later traced the initiating event to an unintended opening of a vent valve and introduced software and engineering changes before the second flight.

Another layer of European launch capacity

Europe’s interest in commercial launch companies is partly economic. The growing number of small Earth-observation, communications and research satellites has created demand for launch schedules that do not always fit larger rockets or rideshare missions.

It is also strategic. Weather forecasting, navigation, secure communications, climate monitoring and emergency response increasingly depend on space infrastructure. Governments seeking resilience therefore need more than satellites: they need launch vehicles, spaceports, skilled workers, supply chains and access to suitable orbital routes.

Spectrum is not a direct replacement for Europe’s larger institutional launch systems. Ariane 6 serves a different payload class, while Vega-C occupies another part of the market. The European Times has previously examined how the Ariane 6 programme became central to Europe’s pursuit of independent access to space.

A credible commercial launcher could nevertheless complement those systems. More providers may offer customers greater scheduling flexibility, strengthen technical competition and reduce the consequences of delays or failures affecting any single vehicle.

Success now means repetition

One orbital flight cannot establish reliability, affordability or a sustainable launch business. Those judgments require repeated missions, transparent performance data and evidence that production can expand without weakening safety or quality control.

Isar Aerospace says Spectrum vehicles three to seven are already in production. Its new 40,000-square-metre facility near Munich is intended eventually to support the manufacture of as many as 40 launch vehicles annually. The company is also developing another launch complex in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Those ambitions now move from engineering promise towards industrial scrutiny. Customers will examine launch prices, insurance requirements, scheduling and mission success. European institutions should also be clear about what public support is intended to achieve, how contracts are awarded and whether emerging providers can build durable supply chains and skilled employment.

Spectrum’s second flight has answered the immediate technical question of whether the vehicle can reach orbit. The more consequential question is whether Isar Aerospace can turn that achievement into a dependable service. If it can, the launch from Andøya may be remembered not simply as a record, but as the moment Europe’s commercial launch market gained a credible new participant.
