Stephen Curry’s $29.1 million house sale doesn’t signal a Golden State exit, but it should

Stephen Curry no longer owns one of the most expensive homes in the Bay Area, and the timing of the sale has NBA fans talking.

Curry and his wife, Ayesha, offloaded their 17,761-square-foot Atherton estate for $29.1 million. News of the sale broke on August 25th, but the couple are said to have moved out of the Redwood Oaks property earlier this year.

The Currys still own other property in Atherton, and they sold a similar home there for just over $30 million in 2021.

This sale seems to be financially motivated more than anything else. None of it reads as a hint that Curry wants out — but with the offseason the Warriors are having, it should.

Why Curry should leave the Warriors

Everybody loves a one-team guy. Fans develop the most special bonds with players who show loyalty to the franchise.

Sentiment aside, though, the Warriors have been in limbo ever since that surprise 2022 championship, which was largely down to the individual greatness of #30.

Losing trades, falling short in the postseason, and most recently, failing to attract free agents to the Bay Area, are all symptoms of a dynasty fallen. That’s the harsh truth of the matter.

For Curry though, his race in the NBA is not yet run. Sure, he’s getting up there — he turned 38 just before the playoffs — but he’s still the best shooter in the league, and looks like he has at least a couple more All-Star-level seasons in him.

Far be it from us to tell the Warriors front office how to run a successful basketball team, but failing to strengthen this summer has shown an apparent lack of ambition. Why then, should Curry not explore his future?

LeBron James is doing it in Philly. Durant, that one speaks for itself. Curry deserves a real shot at another ring, and at climbing up the all-time list.

If he was to go to Boston, for example, and win a chip as the first or second option, that would give him five in total. That’s surely enough for top 5 all time, right?

Curry’s Warriors legacy is safe

No move Curry makes now can undo what he already did in the Bay.

Golden State made the playoffs once in the 15 years before they took him 7th overall in 2009. They had not won a title since 1975. He gave them four of them, along with two MVPs — one unanimous — a Finals MVP in 2022, and more 3-pointers than anyone in the history of the sport.

He also changed how the game is played, from the NBA down to every high school gym in America. Warriors fans owe him everything, and a change of scenery at 38 won’t undo that.

This roster is in transition, and the West is not waiting. San Antonio won 62 games and reached the Finals with 22-year-old Victor Wembanyama. Oklahoma City has back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Minnesota is an even tougher proposition now. Golden State is nowhere near their level.

Sell the rest of those houses, Steph, take the paycut LeBron just took, and go get one more shot at the Larry O’Brien.
