Aotearoa’s first entirely secondhand biddable fashion show, Everyday Runway, took place this week and was launched and hosted by Trade Me via Special PR.
The event took place to coincide with new findings from Trade Me’s annual Circular Economy Report, which reveals Kiwi attitudes toward secondhand fashion.
Insights from the report highlighted the treasure trove of sellable fashion items New Zealanders are sitting on, with the average Kiwi having seven unused items in their wardrobe that could be turned into cash (totalling 11 million items across the country). The total value of our unused fashion pieces equates to $300 million for all of Aotearoa.
Developed and executed by Special PR, the Everyday Runway event encouraged Kiwi to buy and sell secondhand. To get Kiwi hunting through their wardrobes and listing items, Trade Me offered free selling in its Clothing & Fashion category for one week (20-26 February).*
The event, which took place at Inwards Goods in Auckland CBD, was styled by Sammy Salsa and hosted by Sharyn Casey. Items showcased on the Everyday Runway were sourced entirely from Trade Me and garments were modelled by leading talent – including Kiwi actor Vinnie Bennett.
The event featured carefully curated looks from a range of brands, including vintage pieces from Kiwi designers such as Karen Walker, Ruby, Kowtow, and Trelise Cooper. Featured items are available for bidding via Trade Me’s Everyday Runway store with all proceeds going to RainbowYOUTH.
Sarah Prigg, Senior Account Director at Special PR, says: “The success of Trade Me’s Everyday Runway is testament to the growing popularity of secondhand fashion. It’s no surprise pre-loved is more popular than ever among New Zealanders – it’s better for the planet and our back pockets.
“After seeing the incredible looks sourced entirely from Trade Me, we hope Kiwi are encouraged to embrace the circular fashion economy and consider buying and selling secondhand.”
Trade Me’s Brand, Marketing and Communications Director, Sally Feinson, says: “Trade Me has long been home to some of Aotearoa’s most incredible fashion finds. The Clothing & Fashion category on our platform is a time capsule of Kiwi fashion and it was incredible to see it come to life with Sammy Salsa’s modern and stylish twist on pre-loved Trade Me pieces.
“Kiwi are unknowingly sitting on hundreds of dollars of potential profit in their wardrobe. Everyday Runway shows us that fashion doesn’t have to cost the world. By simply looking in our wardrobes at what we don’t currently use and listing it online, we could all sell and buy ourselves a whole new look. Amid the rising cost of living, going secondhand will become more accessible and realistic. It’s time we embrace pre-loved as a major source of clothing and fashion.”
