LeBron James’ Departure Spurs Tyrese Maxey’s Rise
LeBron James recently revealed that Tyrese Maxey was among the first to reach out to him following the announcement of his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers. This connection emerged as a critical factor influencing James’ choice to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. Observing the 26-year-old guard’s impressive performance and MVP candidacy has proven gratifying for the basketball icon.
Maxey’s Impressive Stats
Currently, Maxey boasts an average of 28 points per game, ranking him fifth in the league. His shooting percentage stands at an impressive 48.6%, and he contributes significantly during crucial moments, averaging 11 points in the fourth quarter, the highest in the NBA. Maxey is pivotal to a talented 76ers offense that continues to develop cohesion.
The Bond Between LeBron and Maxey
James and Maxey have spent multiple offseasons training together, and LeBron has consistently praised Maxey’s work ethic. The opportunity to witness Maxey’s evolution up close as a teammate with the 76ers offers James a different perspective compared to only watching him during their biannual matchups.
Maxey’s Influence on LeBron’s Decision
Although the 76ers were not initially a top contender on LeBron’s radar, he acknowledged a shift in perspective due to the trade involving Jaylen Brown. Maxey’s character and abilities significantly swayed James, who expressed admiration for both the person off the court and the player on it.
Competitive Aspirations
In the pursuit of his fifth championship, James ruled out a return to the Cavaliers or a reunion with the Miami Heat. His focus lay on finding a team capable of championship contention, leading him to Philadelphia.
76ers’ Early Season Success
The 76ers have achieved a league-leading eight victories early in the season, signaling their potential for a deep playoff run. Maxey’s performance remains exceptional; even on a night where his shooting was below par, he scored 19 points, with 11 coming in the decisive fourth quarter, alongside seven assists.
A Boost from a Legendary Teammate
For Maxey, partnering with LeBron provides a unique opportunity for growth. The chance to learn from one of the greatest players in NBA history undoubtedly enhances Maxey’s game, as he aims to follow in the footsteps of past MVP winners.
Team Success Over Individual Glory
While Maxey remains aware of his inclusion in MVP discussions, his primary focus is on collective success rather than individual accolades. The 76ers’ current strong performance has led to skepticism about Maxey’s contributions due to the talent around him, including LeBron. However, if he maintains his current level of play, dismissing his impact will become increasingly difficult.
