Will Castro face the same fate as Maduro?
The Castro indictment is prompting questions about whether the Trump administration has a plan brewing for the Cuban leader that echoes how it pushed Maduro from power in Venezuela.
Maduro was indicted on drug trafficking charges back in 2020.
In January, on Trump’s order, a U.S. military special operations team launched an incursion into Caracas, plucked Maduro from his presidential compound and whisked him to New York to face the charges.
Trump has on several occasions publicly floated using the Venezuela mission as a template for regime change in Cuba.
“The indictment and removal of Maduro sent a clear message to his socialist allies in Havana: this is our hemisphere and those that destabilize it and threaten the United States will face consequences,” Trump said in a statement posted today.
That doesn’t necessarily mean U.S. helicopters will be landing in Havana in the coming hours to seize Castro. But with today’s indictment, that threat certainly looms.
