G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting Exposes Ongoing Tensions with Russia
Atlanta (dpa) – As the G20 summit approaches in just over six weeks, significant tensions persist between European nations and Russia, underscored by the recent foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta. A notable symbol of this discord was the cancellation of the traditional “family photo,” which would have included Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Contentious Discussions Amid Serious Concerns
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighted the contentious nature of discussions among participants in Atlanta, although he noted that the atmosphere remained businesslike, reflecting the gravity of global issues at hand. “Everyone realizes the critical state of the world,” stated Wadephul, emphasizing the G20’s role in seeking resolutions to escalating conflicts and crises.
Focus on Supply Chains and Global Food Security
During the third and final working session on Saturday, the ministers are set to address the pressing issue of supply chain disruptions. Wadephul has consistently pointed to Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a major factor contributing to food insecurity in regions like the Middle East and the Global South.
No Breakthrough Anticipated
Expectations for a substantial breakthrough on the ongoing conflicts remain low. Prior to the meeting, indications suggested that a joint closing statement might not be forthcoming, further illustrating the fractured state of relations among the G20 nations.
