Dragons, bleached blondes, and sword fights, oh my! HBO finally released the long-awaited trailer to the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.
The 10-episode series is based on novelist George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, telling the story of the House Targaryen, ultimately leading up to a Targaryen civil war.
The trailer, in which the first words said are “war is afoot,” depicts succession drama, intense sword fights, and a Princess who we can predict will be a strong female character for all the feminists out there, is just dramatic enough to quench our Game of Thrones thirst — and perhaps remind us of all the reasons we loved it before that controversial series finale in 2019.
House of the Dragon is set to star Paddy Considine (King Viserys Targaryen), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Emma D’Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Eve Best (Princess Rhaenys Targaryen), Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria), and Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower).
Last December, Martin teased the upcoming prequel saying, “it’s dark, it’s powerful, it’s visceral … just the way I like my epic fantasy.” And just by the looks of the trailer, it’s safe to say he was not wrong.
House of the Dragon premieres Sunday, Aug. 21 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
