It appeared through most of Round 3 on Saturday that Jon Rahm would run away with the 2023 American Express. Beginning the day two strokes off the lead of Davis Thompson, the former world No. 1 played his first 12 holes in 8 under to reach 24 under for the tournament and grab solo possession of the lead.
Only then did Rahm begin to stall, failing to take advantage of par 5s and narrowly missing putts on the greens. Playing his final six holes in 1 over, Rahm enters the final round at 23 under and in a share of the lead with Thompson. The PGA Tour rookie was relatively slow out the gates but continued to give himself birdie opportunity after birdie opportunity to retain his spot atop the leaderboard.
Ultimately signing for a 5-under 67 at the Stadium Course, Thompson stands at 23 under and remains in prime position for his first victory on the PGA Tour. Having experienced a decorated amateur, collegiate and Korn Ferry Tour career, Thompson will need to overcome nerves and one of the world’s best if he is to begin his rookie campaign with a bang.
If he or Rahm is to stumble, another come-from-behind Sunday could occur on the PGA Tour as Tom Kim, Sam Burns, Taylor Montgomery, Sungjae Im, and Scottie Scheffler are all within six strokes of the lead. With the Stadium Course having previously yielded final-round fireworks, more of the same could be in store if the leaders aren’t careful.
