3 Common Mistakes to Avoid

Ending a relationship with someone you once loved (or still love) is one of the hardest conversations you may ever have.

Even if it’s the “right decision”, there will likely be pain and grief. Both of you are saying goodbye not only to a person, but to mutual friends, shared history, and a future you once imagined together. Although some pain is inevitable, there are ways that the person initiating the breakup can  prevent unnecessary additional suffering.

In my work as a couples therapist, I have seen these three communication mistakes make things worse than they need to be:

  1. Ending the relationship abruptly without explanation (Leaving the other party blindsided)

  2. Over-processing the reasons for the breakup (Adding insult to injury)

  3. Failing to communicate clearly that the relationship is actually over (Being wishy-washy)

I remind my clients that the goal isn’t to find the perfect words that will keep your partner from hurting. Those words don’t exist.

The goal is to communicate with enough honesty, compassion, and clarity that you don’t add unnecessary injury to an already painful experience.

Mistake #1: Abruptly Cutting Off the Relationship Without Explanation

When you know you want to leave, it can be tempting to get the hardest part over with as quickly as possible. You probably want to avoid a painful back and forth, but your attempt to come across as clear can land as aggressive and disrespectful.

Sometimes people end things abruptly as an attempt to “save face” or “avoid drama”, by saying things like, “There’s nothing to talk about, it will only make this harder.”

When a relationship is ailing, it’s not uncommon to withdraw emotionally before telling their partner what is happening. By the time the conversation happens, there’s an icy distance that has been building, which can lead to things like breaking up over text, or saying it in the middle of an argument then never coming back.

For the person leaving, this can feel like setting a boundary. For the person being left, it feels like falling through a trapdoor.

Unless there is a concern about emotional or physical safety, your partner deserves enough information to understand what is happening. That doesn’t mean litigating every argument, it means honoring the significance of what you shared together and offering enough context for the ending to make sense.

How Do I Even Begin the Conversation?

You might say:

“I know this may feel sudden to you, but this isn’t a decision I’ve made impulsively. I’ve been struggling with this for some time, and I’ve come to the difficult decision that I don’t want to continue our relationship.”

You can be compassionate without opening the decision up for negotiation.

And ideally, the first time your partner learns that you’re deeply unhappy shouldn’t be the moment you’re walking out the door.

If you are still deciding whether your relationship can be repaired, that is a different stage of the process. Taking time to consider some important questions to ask yourself before breaking up can help you internally explore whether or not you are truly ready to leave.

Once you have made that decision, however, your partner deserves to hear it directly.

Mistake #2: Over-Processing the Reasons for the Breakup

If too little explanation can be hurtful, too much can be equally damaging. This is where well-intentioned people sometimes get into trouble. You want your partner to understand. They want to understand. So you keep talking.

And talking.

And talking.

The conversation becomes an autopsy of the relationship: every disappointment, every incompatibility, every unresolved conflict, every moment when you felt unseen or let down.

At some point, more information stops providing clarity and starts adding insult to injury and creating even more painful wounds. You might feel the need to justify your decision, with an attempt to convince them that they agree with you.

I see this in my office over and over again because it’s human nature to want a breakup to be a mutual decision. So well-meaning people go into more detail about why the decision to break up

“makes sense”, but in reality, they are simply hitting someone over the head when they are feeling heartbroken.

Your partner does not need a comprehensive list of everything you found disappointing about them in order to understand that the relationship is ending. This is particularly important because people often remember breakup conversations for years. Be thoughtful about the words you leave with someone.

Instead of cataloging your partner’s shortcomings, speak from your own experience.

“I’ve realized that this relationship isn’t working for me anymore.”

“I’ve thought carefully about this, and I don’t believe continuing together is right for me.”

“I know you may see our relationship differently, and I respect that. This is where I’ve landed.”

Your partner may ask questions, and answering some of them honestly can be an act of kindness. But there is a difference between providing closure and opening wounds.

You may never agree.

Closure doesn’t require consensus.

Mistake #3: Leaving Without Clarity

This may be the most compassionate-looking mistake of all.

You don’t want to hurt the person you care about, so you soften the message.

“I just need some space.”

“Let’s take a little break.”

“I don’t know what the future holds.”

Sometimes those statements are true. But when you already know that the relationship is over, ambiguity isn’t kindness.

It is hope.

And false hope can prolong grief considerably.

Your partner may begin looking for evidence that you’re reconsidering. A friendly text becomes a sign. A warm conversation becomes a possibility. A hug becomes evidence that perhaps you aren’t really finished.

If your decision is final, clarity allows grieving to begin.

You can be warm and unequivocal at the same time:

“I care about you very much, and I’m certain that I want to end our romantic relationship.”

“I know this is painful, and I don’t want to give you the impression that I’m asking for a temporary separation. I’ve made the decision to end our relationship.”

Clarity can feel cruel in the moment because you are watching someone you care about absorb painful information. But clarity and cruelty are not the same thing. Cruelty includes an intention to cause harm, and clarity shows your former partner that your respect them enough to be honest.

The Goal Isn’t a Painless Breakup

There is no communication strategy that will make the loss of an important relationship painless.

Nor should that be the standard by which you judge whether you handled the ending well.

Your partner may be angry with you. They may disagree with your decision. They may believe you should have tried harder. They may tell a different story about why the relationship ended.

You cannot control any of that.

What you can control is whether you leave with integrity by doing the following:

  1. Honor the time you shared by having a face to face open conversation about your decision to leave
  2. Don’t offer so much explanation that you leave them carrying a list of criticisms they can never unhear.

When you know the relationship is over, have the courage to say so clearly.

If you are in a situation where you are planning to leave, but not quite ready to have the conversation, you might want to do a bit more self-reflection to make sure that you feel clear about your decision. Here is an article that will help you explore some questions to ask yourself before breaking up.

Separations are painful, but they allow space for new and different paths.

Clear examples do more than decorate an explanation: they show how an idea behaves under recognizable conditions. In education and software documentation alike, strong illustrations begin with a defined goal, then reveal the steps, assumptions, and result without unnecessary detail. A practical test example should state the input, expected output, and boundary condition, because these elements show whether a rule works beyond the simplest case. Including a contrasting case also helps readers distinguish a valid application from a tempting but incorrect one, while concise notes explain why the outcomes differ. When examples are updated with current data and checked against the underlying rule, they remain useful across classrooms, product guides, and professional training.
