7 Things you need to take up kayaking as a hobby – Crazy sexy fun traveler

23 Sep2022

There’s just something about kayaking that seems to appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds. Maybe it’s the peacefulness of being on the water or the challenge of navigating rapids. No matter what your reason for wanting to try kayaking is, there are a few things you need to take into account before getting started.

Kayaking as a hobby – what to know

1. Paddles

Paddles come in all shapes and sizes, so choosing one that’s comfortable for you is crucial. If you’re starting, it might be a good idea to borrow a paddle from a friend or rent one from a kayaking outfitter. That way, you can get a feel for what size and style work best before making a purchase.

When buying paddles, you’ll also need to decide on materials. Paddles can be made from wood, aluminum, fiberglass, or carbon fiber. Again, trying out different materials is essential to see what you prefer. For example, some people find that wooden paddles are more comfortable to grip, while others find that lightweight carbon fiber paddles are easier to maneuver.

Many make the mistake of thinking that all kayak paddles are the same. While the basic design is similar, there are a few different types of kayak paddles. For instance, some paddles have blades on both ends, while others have a blade on one end and a handle on the other.

There are also “straight” and “bent” shaft kayak paddles. Straight shaft paddles are less expensive and easier to find but can be more challenging. Bent shaft paddles, however, are a bit pricier but offer better performance.

2. Kayak

There are many different types of kayaks on the market, so it’s essential to do your research before making a purchase. For example, if you’re interested in kayaking in rivers or whitewater, you’ll need a different type of kayak than someone who wants to paddle in calm lakes or streams.

You’ll also need to decide on the material when choosing a kayak. Kayaks can be made from fiberglass, plastic, Kevlar, or carbon fiber. Each material has advantages and disadvantages, so it’s essential to do your research before deciding.

It’s significant to focus on quality when purchasing. A good kayak can last for many years with proper care, while a cheap one will likely need to be replaced soon. In close connection to quality is the issue of price. You need to know that kayak prices vary from store to store, hence the importance of shopping around before settling for a particular store. Start by reading reliable websites regarding kayaks. This will help you compare various kayaks in the market before settling for a particular one.

3. Life jacket

Wearing a life jacket is essential when kayaking. Most states require that all kayakers wear a life jacket at all times. Life jackets come in different sizes and styles, so choosing one that fits you well and is comfortable to wear is essential.

There are two main types of life jackets: inflatable and foam. Inflatable life jackets are more compact and can be easily packed into a kayak hatch. On the other hand, foam life jackets provide more flotation but can be bulky and uncomfortable to wear.

When you want to buy online, you should enter the coupon code to get a great deal on your purchase. Before making your purchase, you must also pay attention to the store’s return policy. See if the online seller offers a money-back guarantee in case you are unsatisfied with the product.

4. Swimwear

It would be best if you also had the right swimwear when you go kayaking. Swimwear made from quick-drying material is ideal, as you will likely get wet when kayaking. Avoid cotton clothing, as it will take a long time to dry and can become uncomfortable when wet.

Instead, opt for swimwear made from synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon. You should also avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing, as it can become tangled in the kayak’s moving parts. The trick is in the mix to ensure you have the appropriate clothing to keep you comfortable while you are kayaking.

At the same time, you should wear shoes that fit snugly and won’t come off quickly. Ideally barefoot water shoes. Sandals or flip-flops are bad, as they can quickly disappear and get lost in the water. Instead, opt for closed-toe shoes that protect your feet from sharp rocks or shells. If you’re kayaking in cold weather, you might also want to invest in water shoes designed to keep your feet warm.

5. Sunscreen

Whenever you spend time outdoors, the degree of sun exposure needs to be controlled to protect your skin from damage. The sun’s UV rays can cause sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer, if you are not leading a very healthy life. The UV rays react with the toxins in your skin, especially at mid-day.

That’s why applying natural sunscreen is vital before spending time in the sun. When choosing a sunscreen, look for one with natural SPF of at least 30. I recommend using cold pressed natural oils. Also, reapply natural sunscreen oils every two hours or more if you’re sweating or swimming. Hats and sunglasses can also help protect your face from the sun’s harmful rays.

6. First aid kit

Generally, you never know when you might need medical assistance, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Pack a basic first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.

Depending on where you’ll be kayaking, you should also consider packing more specific items, such as a snake bite kit or a splint. Your kit must also have a list of emergency numbers and your insurance information.

7. Spray skirt

This is a piece of fabric that attaches to the cockpit of your kayak and helps to keep water out. Spray skirts are essential in whitewater or rough water conditions. When choosing a spray skirt, get one that fits your kayak snugly and is made from durable material.

When buying a spray skirt, you should also look for one with a “rand” or waist seal. This will help to keep water from seeping into the cockpit and soaking your legs. Ordinarily, a spray skirt is not necessary for calm water kayaking, but it’s always a good idea to have one on hand in case conditions change suddenly.

Kayaking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. However, preparing before heading out on the water is essential. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience.
