9 foods you shouldn’t keep in the fridge

[ad_1]

Have you tried spreading fresh-from-the-refrigerator butter on a piece of toast? Yes, nothing works. Oddly enough, there are some foods that taste better when they haven’t been cold in the fridge.

Here’s who they are:

BUTTER

Although it contains pasteurized milk, butter can and should sit on the counter for several days. Just remember to keep the oil in an airtight container and keep your kitchen temperature below 21 degrees. Can’t use all the oil at once? Then leave some of it outside and the rest in the fridge.

MELONS

Unpeeled, rough-skinned melons (as well as watermelon) should be left out of the refrigerator to ripen. One exception? The Honeydew variety, which doesn’t really continue to ripen after picking and feels best in the fridge.

TOMATOES

Like melons, these guys just keep getting better at room temperature. If you are worried about them getting soft, you can refrigerate them. Or better yet, use them right away.

POTATOES

Refrigeration turns the starch in the potatoes into sugar, which means a dense texture and sweet taste. Instead, she keeps them in a paper bag in a cool, dark place under the sink.

ONION

Onions just don’t keep in the fridge. It’s a law!

BREAD We know you’re worried about bugs, but storing bread in the fridge isn’t the answer. (It will dry out and go stale.) Instead, store in a bread box for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.

HONEY

The cold makes the honey crystallize faster. So it is not a good idea to keep it in the fridge.

COFFEE

The coffee beans absorb the smell from the other foods, which will make your coffee afterwards with a variety of aromas… which is not good at all.

BASIL

Unlike other herbs, basil soaks in cold temperatures and absorbs other food odors. Instead, place it on the counter in a glass of water like fresh flowers.
