Police officer stabbed, man shot in Roseland, officials say

Police shot a man in Roseland Saturday evening after the man had been holding a woman at knife point and stabbed an officer, officials said.

Officers were told that a man had come into a home and was holding a woman at knife point when they were called to the 9900 block of South Wentworth Avenue around 7:30 p.m., Chicago Police Deputy Chief Daniel O’Connor said at a news conference late Saturday night.

The officers found the man and woman in a bedroom inside the house and spoke with the knife-wielding man.

“They were able to get the female out of the bedroom and to a safe location,” O’Connor said.

Officers then ordered the man to drop the knife, and one officer discharged his stun gun. The stun gun was ineffective in subduing the man with the knife, who then lunged at the other officer and stabbed him in the head and shoulder, O’Connor said.

That officer then shot the man, O’Connor said, adding that police rendered first aid.

Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Chief Curtis Hudson said paramedics took a 29-year-old officer who had been stabbed multiple times to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The stabbed officer suffered serious wounds, but his condition had stabilized, both Hudson and O’Connor said. O’Connor added that the other officer was also brought to Christ and said to be in good condition.

Hudson said a 35-year-old man he described as the offender was in critical condition as he was taken by ambulance from 9933 S. Wentworth Ave. to the University of Chicago Medical Center. O’Connor did not provide any further updates to the man’s condition at the late night news conference.

Police did not say how many times the officer fired his gun. They also did not say how old the two wounded people were and were unable to clarify what the relationship between the man with the knife and the woman he had held at knife point was.

Representatives from Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability were also on the scene.
