Japan to reorganize Self-Defense Forces under joint command

TOKYO — The Japanese government plans to put all three branches of the Self-Defense Forces under a joint command, aiming to improve readiness in response to heightened regional threats.

The ground, maritime and air forces will operate under a single commander after an organizational shake-up to be completed within five years.
