The airline has already received an air transport license but is awaiting several other permits, including the aircraft operator certificate, the carrier’s chairman Jonathan Hanh Nguyen said.
The businessman, an overseas Vietnamese returnee and today one of the wealthiest persons in Vietnam who made his fortune with luxury retail group Imex Pan Pacific Group, together with his family owns 30 per cent directly in the new carrier, while the rest is held by his company.
Contracts with chip manufacturers
IPP Air Cargo plans to focus on air transport of manufactured goods for various domestic and international companies. The airline has already signed shipment deals with two of the world’s largest chip manufacturers with factories in northern Vietnam.
Nguyen said that the airline’s first route will be from Cat Bi International Airport in the northern city of Hai Phong to primarily serve these two manufacturers.
The airline has previously discussed a weekly flight between Queensland, Australia and Danang. The route will begin at the start of next year and carry agricultural produce between the two countries.
Boeing as the aircraft of choice
The flights will be operated with four leased Boeing 737 800BCF aircraft, one of which has been already delivered, with the others due in December and April next year. IPP Air Cargo also signed deals worth $3.5 billion to buy 10 Boeing 777 freighters.
The carrier has a charter capital of 300 billion doing ($12.8 million). It targets a revenue of $71 million in the first year of operation.
