Most Australians can look forward to a sunny Christmas Day this weekend despite the uncharacteristically wet weather in the country’s southern states.
The week leading up to Christmas will continue with the colder temperatures experienced throughout the last week and could bring significant rainfall.
The rainy and cold conditions will soon make way for a heat spell, with the weekend likely to usher in a heatwave for the last week of the year.

Adelaide will see the worst of the heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar to 37C on Boxing Day and 41C on Tuesday.
Christmas Day in the South Australian capital will hover around 32C.
Sydneysiders should also break out the sunscreen on Sunday with temperatures reaching 26C in the CBD and 31C in the west.
The sunshine will be a welcome change for the city, which has just endured its wettest year on record.
New South Wales will avoid the worst of the heatwave conditions, which is predicted to target South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.
Melbourne looks likely to swelter through Christmas and Boxing Day, which are likely to reach 29C and 30C respectively.
Tuesday and Wednesday in the city will be even hotter, with a top of 36C forecast.
Hobart is set for 26C on Christmas Day and a scorching 28C on Tuesday.
The official forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology shows a low intensity to severe heatwave hitting Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and NSW.
