Sometimes, it’s hard to tell whether a trend will become a pattern. Bell bottoms. Pet rocks. Devil sticks. They all trended so hard that we thought they’d stick. If you’re up on pop culture, you know that they did not. In the NBA, small ball was the trend for some time.
It appeared as if it may become a pattern. It did, and it didn’t. Teams need a small ball lineup in their holster, but at the same time, jumbo, playmaking wings are what’s currently trendy.
Just ask the Toronto Raptors. They’ve got a surplus of such players. In fact, some would argue that they’ve got too many.
The idea behind it is to have as many players that can switch and disrupt the offense with their length as possible. Making it challenging to get into routine elements of offense.
There are some problems that can arise from such an identity. For example, there is a lack of rim protection without a real center.
Could they add one more?
