Belgium, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) Around 30.000 healthcare workers voiced their dissatisfaction with how their healthcare system works and initiated protests in the Spanish capital Madrid. Protesters say the problems are too numerous.
Many blame the regional government, led by the Popular Party’s Isabel Diaz Ayuso, claiming it is doing damage to the public health care system. Protesters say that the issue is poor staffing – that is, there are not enough medical workers, needed to provide quality service. In their words, some of them get to have up to 50 patients each day and they are able to spare only five or six minutes for each of them. That, apparently, is not enough time.
Another issue is alleged advocating for private health providers. Protesters claim that out of all the money that is spent on health care in Madrid, half ends up in the private sector.
Also, protest organizers say that, even though Madrid belongs to one of the richest regions in Spain, they spend the least money per capita on primary health care.
Local government was already publicly condemned before, during the pandemic, when Madrid had one of the highest excess mortality rates in Europe. It is no surprise that one of the protesters now was wearing the costume of the Grim Reaper and holding a sign that says “I am Ayuso’s plan for the emergency ward.”
Just a few months ago, in November, there was a similar protest in Madrid. Tens of thousands demanded better working conditions for healthcare workers.
As for Ayuso, she herself dismissed the claim that her administration is damaging public health services while favoring the private sector. She says that the protests have been orchestrated by left-wing parties in the wake of regional elections in Spain scheduled for the this spring.
