Rowers Chloe Steele, left, Juno O’Connor and Ethan Steele participate in the Nelson Rowing Club Rowathon event in the former travel business in Trafalgar St, Nelson.
Secondary-school aged rowers knocked out about 700km on rowing machines as a fundraiser to help finance their trip to the nationals.
Nelson rowing club administrator Fiona Lulham said 42 rowers aged between 14 to 17 took part in the erg-a-thon on Saturday.
This year’s Maadi Cup is at Karapiro in March and the rowers collectively rowed a distance of 701km – the distance from Nelson to Karapiro.
There were seven ergs (rowing machines) and one erg was set up to support the kids with coaches, parents and ex-rowers taking part.

About $10,000 was raised on Saturday and the club was thankful for the business community who helped support the event.
About 45 to 50 students will be travelling to Karapiro.
Lulham said the event was awesome team event. It started at 6.30am and it was awesome how everyone supported each other when people started tiring about lunchtime.
“It’s a huge distance to cover.”
Rowers rotated their time on the ergs, spending about 10 to 15 minutes on each session.
The erg-a-thon took place in an empty shop between BNZ and Whitcoulls.
