Auckland firefighters say they are responding to over 500 calls related to the heavy rain lashing the region.
A spokesperson says every fire truck in Auckland has been dispatched and there are 14 people answering 111 calls.
More than 100 millimetres of rain has fallen across the city today, closing roads, cancelling flights and Elton John’s concert.
Residents in flood-prone areas of West Auckland are being asked to prepare to evacuate.
Labour Party deputy leader Kelvin Davis has posted on Facebook that some homes in Ranui and Swanson in west Auckland are knee deep in water.
Auckland Emergency Management says the severe weather across the city is worsening and it’s trying to assess what action is needed.
The police say there is significant flooding at Taupaki, Albany, New Lynn, Henderson and Kumeu.
There are also slips on Dome Valley Road and Kaipara Flats Road.
The appalling weather has led to the cancellation of Sir Elton John’s concert at Mt Smart Stadium just a few minutes before the singer was due to take the stage.
