One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady has announced his retirement for the second time, however this time he’s “retiring for good.”
Brady announced that he was retiring in February 2022 before changing his mind 40 days later and returning to play a season with the Tampa Bay Buccanneers.
In a video posted on Twitter, Brady said: “Good morning guys, I’ll get to the point right away, I’m retiring, for good. I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first.
“You only get one super emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year.”
The 45-year-old ended his career with some awe-inspiring stats, with the most yards passed at 89,214, and 649 passing touchdowns. He is currently the only player in the NFL’s history to have won more than five Super Bowls.
He spent his first 20 seasons with the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2019 where he was picked 199th in the 2000 draft by the Patriots behind six other quarterbacks. In 2001, Brady took over as the starter and the Patriots beat the Rams in the Super Bowl.
Under the Patriots (after the 2004 season) he went on to win six more Super Bowls, the seventh came when he joined the Buccanneers in 2020.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft said: “I am so proud of Tommy. No player in NFL history has done it as well for as long as Tom Brady. He is the fiercest competitor I have ever known and the ultimate champion.
“He led the Patriots to two decades of unprecedented dominance. He is truly the greatest of all time.”
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said: “He entered the NFL with little to no fanfare and leaves as the most successful player in league history. His relentless pursuit of excellence drove him on a daily basis.”
When Brady left for the Buccaneers in 2020 he helped them win the title in his first season, which led him to be named the game’s most valuable player for the fifth time.
When you think of Tom Brady you understand why he is the G.O.A.T (greatest of all time) in American football, the quarterback led his team to the playoffs in his 20 seasons as a starter, he holds an all-time NFL record with 251 regular season wins, 35 playoff wins and 10 Super Bowl appearances.
After retiring from the NFL Brady was offered a 10-year contract with Fox Sports as a lead NFL analyst worth $375 million, a deal that could make Brady the highest-paid sports broadcaster of all time.
