Arsenal v Everton, Southampton 1-2 Grimsby: Premier League and FA Cup – live | Soccer

Key events

Sheffield United 1-0 Spurs. The Blades have four added minutes to navigate. In the first, Son dribbles into the box down the left. He’s preparing to shoot when Robinson slides across and executes a perfectly timed tackle to dispossess him. Brave under the circumstances!

Sheffield United 1-0 Spurs. Tottenham haven’t done much since going behind, and time is running out. Just a couple of minutes plus stoppages to go.

FULL TIME: Arsenal 4-0 Everton

The Gunners get revenge for their defeat at Goodison, and how. They go five clear at the top of the Premier League.

FULL TIME: Manchester United 3-1 West Ham

West Ham’s 43-year wait for a fourth FA Cup goes on. As for Manchester United, they’re in the quarter-finals, and the quadruple remains a live prospect!

GOAL! Manchester United 3-1 West Ham (Fred 90+5)

West Ham in tatters at the back. From the edge of the box, Fred slots a loose ball into the bottom left. If it wasn’t over already, it is now.

Updated at 16.40 EST

GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Wolves (Salah 77)

Tsimikas powers his way down the left and crosses for Salah, who does enough to bundle the ball into the net. Not the cleanest finish, but he’ll take it!

GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 West Ham (Garnacho 90)

When you’re hot, you’re hot … and Manchester United are cooking right now. They lifted the League Cup on Sunday, and now they’ve surely booked their place in the quarter finals, Garnacho cutting in from the left and curling into the right-hand portion of the net. Barry is on it!

GOAL! Sheffield United 1-0 Spurs (Ndiaye 79)

Another shock on the cards here! Ndiaye dribbles his way into the Spurs box from the left, drops a shoulder to get past a couple of challenges, and whistles a low shot into the bottom left past a flat-footed Forster!

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Wolves (Van Dijk 73)

Liverpool were denied a couple of minutes ago, but now they’ve taken the lead. Van Dijk’s header is palmed away by Sa, but Jota pops the rebound back to the big defender, who heads home from very close range!

Sheffield United 0-0 Spurs. It’s not been a classic. Can anyone find a winner in the final 12 minutes?

FULL TIME: Burnley 1-0 Fleetwood

The Clarets make it through to the quarters! Anyone fancy a Burnley-Blackburn tie?

Liverpool 0-0 Wolves. Nunez has the ball in the Wolves net, but Jota had fouled Kilman during the build-up, and though the goal’s initially awarded, VAR does its thing.

GOAL! Arsenal 4-0 Everton (Martinelli 80)

Martinelli with a tap-in, benefitting from Nketiah’s good work. This is turning ugly for Everton now. “If Everton go down, which they very well might, it won’t be because of individual mistakes, it will be because they don’t score goals,” argues Matt Burtz. “A grand total of 17 goals in 24 games will not cut it at any level of football. They’ve scored two or more goals in a game exactly twice. This game was already lost when the first goal went it. (That, and Gueye has been giving the ball away cheaply all season.)”

GOAL! Burnley 1-0 Fleetwood (Roberts 90)

Dervisoglu is released into the Fleetwood box down the inside right. His low shot is blocked by Lynch. Burnley come again. Taylor drives from the edge of the D. Lynch saves bravely again. But after some bagatelle, Roberts flicks home from close range. So unfortunate for the keeper, but Burnley had done everything but score. It had been coming, albeit from a very long time.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 West Ham (Aguerd og 77)

The West Ham defender accidentally eyebrows Fernandes’s corner into his own net. Mr Glendenning with the details!

Burnley 0-0 Fleetwood. Burnley keep on knocking at the door, but the ten men of Fleetwood are performing heroically. Can they hold out for five more minutes to force extra time at Turf Moor? “I’m exultant about Gavan Holohan’s two pens for Grimsby and your picture of Niall Maher on the MBM,” writes Gerard Burke. “Both lads soldiered for my local Galway United before leaving us some years ago. Delighted to see them enjoying their evening in Hampshire!”

GOAL! Arsenal 3-0 Everton (Odegaard 70)

Trossard grooves his way to the byline before pulling back for Odegaard, who taps home. A goal out of the old Manchester City playbook. Mikel Arteta paid attention at school, didn’t he.

FULL TIME: Southampton 1-2 Grimsby Town

Grimsby of League Two have beaten Premier League Southampton! What a result! What a shock! Totally deserved, too. What a performance! The Mariners reach their first quarter-final since 1939.

Updated at 16.30 EST

Southampton 1-2 Grimsby. On ITV, Ally McCoist names Gavan Holohan as his man of the match. Will Holohan’s ice-cool brace of penalties be enough to secure a shock for the ages? Two minutes of injury time still to go!

Southampton 1-2 Grimsby. Six minutes of injury time. Six minutes away from one of the great FA Cup shocks. Walker-Peters glides in from the right and spots space top left. His attempted curler nearly goes in … but then swerves back the other way at the last. Goal kick. Walker-Peters holds his head in his hands.

Southampton 1-2 Grimsby. Saints are getting desperate, with only a couple of minutes to go at St Mary’s. Caleta-Car skies a speculative shot towards Dorset.

Burnley 0-0 Fleetwood. A Burnley corner from the left. Taylor meets it at the far stick, and looks to have powered a header home from close range. He reels off to celebrate, only to realise Lynch had parried allowing Holgate to hack off the line!

Sheffield United 0-0 Spurs. A Spurs corner from the left. Perisic nearly eyebrows it home from a tight angle at the near post. But not quite.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 West Ham (Benrahma 54)

Reader, meet Barry.

Southampton 1-2 Grimsby. Saints nearly demonstrate how costly that miss could be. A free kick out on the right is wedged down the inside-right channel. Walcott takes it down inside the area, swivels, and flashes a brilliant shot into the bottom right. The equaliser? Nope! Walcott is a couple of inches offside, and the Grimsby end goes ballistic!

Southampton 1-2 Grimsby. A massive chance for Grimsby to re-establish a two-goal lead! Saints are pressing forward, only for Grimsby to blooter clear. Perraud fails to deal with the ball on the halfway line, allowing McAtee to tear clear! He’s one on one! He enters the box only to take a heavy touch, allowing McCarthy to smother. McAtee batters the turf in frustration. He knows how crucial that goal would have been … and how costly the miss might be.

Burnley 0-0 Fleetwood. A free kick for Burnley, just inside the Fleetwood D. Huge chance. Their set-piece specialist Twine fancies it. He gives Lynch in the Fleetwood goal the eyes, then tries to flip one over the wall and into the top left. But he can only slap the ball into the startled face of the nearest defender. The ten-man League One side continue to hang on.

Burnley 0-0 Fleetwood. It’s all Burnley at Turf Moor, as you’d expect against ten-man Fleetwood. They’re pressing and pressing … but the visitors are showing some steel to hold out. What else would you expect from a side managed by Scott Brown?

HALF TIME: Liverpool 0-0 Wolves

Not a classic evening under the lights at Anfield. Not yet, anyway. “I was in the middle of writing a reply to Mary Waltz (8.27pm GMT) saying that Everton won’t go down because they have enough quality in the squad to beat any top ten side,” begins Kári Tulinius. “Then Gueye, a player of undoubted ability, gave up a goal out of nothing and now I’m not so sure. Everton make so many individual mistakes and Dyche hasn’t been able to fix it yet, and time isn’t on his side. PS Thanks for that wonderful piece on Just Fontaine’s passing.” Very kind, Kári. Adieu, Justo.

Here’s our old pal from the bonny banks of the Tay, Simon McMahon. Is he reeling from the Jim Goodwin news (8.19pm GMT)? Not a bit of it! “Goodwin’s first game in charge of Dundee United? Why, Aberdeen at Tannadice of course. And you’re overlooking the fact that Goodwin’s Alloa side avoided relegation from the Scottish Championship in 2019 by a single point, so we should be OK next season.”

GOAL! Southampton 1-2 Grimsby (Caleta-Car 65)

Caleta-Car owed Saints big after conceding that preposterous penalty. He’s just paid them back. A ball from the left is hit long. Caleta-Car, in an absurd pocket of space, six yards out, sends a sidefoot volley into the bottom right. Easy as that, and Saints are back in it!

Duje Ćaleta-Car of Southampton turns to celebrate afterscores a goal to make it 2-1.

HALF TIME: Sheffield United 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

A reminder that there are no replays in the fifth round. It’ll be extra time and possibly penalties if nobody finds a winner in 90 minutes.

Liverpool 0-0 Wolves. Jota and Nunez combine cutely to tee up Elliott, six yards from goal … but the young midfielder’s header flashes harmlessly wide. The best chance of a quiet match passed up.

Sheffield United 0-0 Spurs. … so having said that, Hojbjerg heads lamely back towards his own box, letting Coulibaly in down the inside-left channel. He’s one on one with Forster, and should give the Championship promotion hopefuls the lead, but suffers an awfully hot rush of blood to the dome and lashes hysterically into the side netting. What a chance for United to take the lead just before half time!

Sheffield United 0-0 Spurs. Lucas Moura sashays down the right and into the Sheffield United box. His cross takes a little nick off a defender, loops over Foderingham from a tight angle, and clips the angle of crossbar and left-hand post before twanging away from danger. Spurs are looking the more likely to make the breakthrough.

HALF TIME: Arsenal 2-0 Everton

As things stand, Arsenal are going five points clear in the title race!

Southampton 0-2 Grimsby. Southampton’s response to falling two behind? A lot of huff, and no little puff.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-0 West Ham

Barry Glendenning, like a pint of plain, is your only man.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Everton (Martinelli 45+1)

Gueye falls asleep. Saka nicks the ball off his toe, and feeds Martinelli, who slots to give the league leaders a cushion just before the break.

Updated at 15.38 EST

Sheffield United 0-0 Spurs. A chance for Richarlison, who powers into the Blades box down the right before sending a fierce dipper inches over the bar. It wasn’t the easiest opportunity, but he holds his head in his hands anyway. Standards are high in Brazil.

GOAL! Southampton 0-2 Grimsby (Holohan pen 50)

Holohan rolled his first penalty down the middle. This time he lashes the second into the top left! McCarthy had no chance! What an ice-cool display from Holohan under intense pressure! A huge shock really is on now!

Fish slap: Grimsby's defender Niall Maher is hit by an inflatable fish as he celebrates after Gavan Holohan scores the team's second goal.

Updated at 15.37 EST

Southampton 0-1 Grimsby. Another penalty for Grimsby at St Mary’s! Caleta-Car competes with Orsi. He tugs and tugs at Orsi’s shoulder, then slaps him in the back with irritation. It’s soft, but what on earth was going through the defender’s mind?! A huge opportunity for Holohan to double the League Two side’s lead!

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Everton (Saka 40)

Arsenal’s player of the season opens the scoring at the Emirates. Saka cuts in from the wing and whistles a shot through Pickford at his near post. The leaders lead! “I’ve have looked at the remaining Everton fixtures,” adds Mary Waltz. “I have come to the conclusion we are going down. Sean is doing his best but we just don’t score enough and most of our remaining matches are against top ten squads. Wearing all black today, researching the Championship. Sigh.”

Updated at 15.29 EST

Southampton 0-1 Grimsby. The second half is underway at St Mary’s.

HALF TIME: Burnley 0-0 Fleetwood Town

The whistle goes for half time seconds after the sending off. The Fleetwood players surround the referee, arguing the case for their young team-mate. But the decision is made. Fleetwood’s backs were against the wall for most of that first 45 with 11 men; it won’t get any easier in the second with ten.

Cian Hayes of Fleetwood is shown a red card.

Updated at 15.28 EST

RED CARD: Hayes (Fleetwood)

The 19-year-old Fleetwood forward Hayes competes for a loose ball on the edge of the Burnley box. He high-kicks only to catch the stooping Cullen upside the head. The referee deems it dangerous play, and immediately sends Hayes packing. That’s at once both understandable and a bit harsh, in so much as you can make an argument for it both ways. Shame for the young man, though.

Some breaking news from Scotland: Dundee United have appointed Jim Goodwin as manager until the end of the season. A reminder of Goodwin’s last three results as boss of Aberdeen: Hearts 5-0 Aberdeen; Darvel 0-1 Aberdeen; Hibernian 6-0 Aberdeen. Our thoughts and prayers are with friend of the Guardian MBM, Simon McMahon.

Sheffield United 0-0 Spurs. It’s tipping down at Bramall Lane. A corner for Spurs out on the right. Son sends it straight through a crowded box. Spurs come back at the hosts, Son picking up possession on the same flank and aiming a curler towards the bottom left that’s easy pickings for Foderingham.

Liverpool 0-0 Wolves. … while Wolves have had the better of the opening exchanges at Anfield.
