Do You Tip In London? (How much Is Enough)

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Tipping is generally expected in London, especially in the service industry such as restaurants, cafes, and bars. The amount of the tip varies, but standard practice is to leave between 10% and 15% of the total bill. However, some restaurants may include an optional service charge in the bill, so it’s worth checking before leaving an additional tip. In other service industries such as taxis and hairdressers, tipping is also common but not always expected. It’s always a good idea to check local customs and practices before tipping.

Tipping At Hotels

In London, tipping at hotels is generally expected, but it is not mandatory. If you have received exceptional service, it is customary to leave a tip as a way of showing your appreciation. Here are some general guidelines for tipping at hotels in London:

1. Housekeeping

It is common to leave a tip of £1-£2 per night for the housekeeping staff who clean your room. You can leave the tip on the bedside table or the desk.

2. Porterage

If a porter helps you with your luggage, you can leave a tip of £1-£2 per bag. If the porter takes your luggage to your room, you can tip them around £5-£10.

3. Concierge

If the concierge has been particularly helpful in arranging transportation or recommending restaurants, you can leave a tip of £5-£10.

4. Restaurant & Bar Staff

If you eat or drink at the hotel’s restaurant or bar, a service charge of 10-12.5% may be added to your bill. If the service charge is not included, a tip of 10-15% is expected.

Tipping At London Bars

Tipping at bars and pubs in London is generally expected but not mandatory. It is common to leave a tip of around 10-15% of the total bill if you receive good service. However, if you are only buying drinks and not receiving table service, it is not necessary to leave a tip. In some bars, a service charge may already be included in the bill, make sure to check before leaving an additional tip.

If you are unsure whether to tip or not, you can always ask the bartender or server for their opinion. It is important to know that in some more upscale bars or cocktail bars, tipping may be more customary and expected. Be prepared to leave a slightly higher tip in those establishments.

Tipping At London Restaurants

Tipping in London restaurants is generally expected, although it’s not mandatory. In the UK, most restaurant workers are paid a minimum wage. Tips are a way for them to earn extra money for their service. If you receive good service, it’s customary to leave a tip of around 10-15% of the total bill. However, if you receive exceptional service, you may want to consider leaving a larger tip.

Many restaurants in London include a service charge of around 12.5% on the bill, especially for larger groups. If this is the case, there’s no need to leave an additional tip, although you’re welcome to do so if you wish.

It’s important to know that tips in the UK are preferred in cash. Many restaurants will distribute tips among the staff at the end of the day. If you tip on a debit or credit card, the staff may not receive the full amount. Therefore the restaurant may deduct a processing fee. Ultimately, tipping is a personal decision. It’s up to you to decide whether or not to leave a tip and how much to leave.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Tipping taxi drivers in London is not mandatory, but it is generally expected. It is considered polite to do so if you have received good service. The amount of tip is usually around 10% of the total fare. However, you can adjust it according to the level of service provided.

In London, taxi drivers are licensed by the Public Carriage Office and are required to pass a rigorous knowledge test. It is known as “The Knowledge” before they can operate a taxi. Therefore, they are highly skilled professionals who provide an important service to residents and visitors alike.

If you choose to tip your taxi driver in London, there are many ways to do so. You can simply add the amount to the total fare and inform the driver that the extra amount is for the tip. Alternatively, you can give the driver cash directly. It is necessary to know that many taxi drivers in London now accept payment by card, including tips.
