Berlin (d.de) – At the meeting of environment, climate and energy ministers of the G7 states in Japan, Germany’s Environment Minister Steffi Lemke intends to campaign for a comprehensive commitment to the biodiversity agreement that was signed in Montreal. Representatives of the world’s leading industrialised countries will be meeting in Sapporo on 15 and 16 April and plan to adopt a communiqué containing joint objectives. Lemke said: “The G7 states are responsible for a large part of the world’s resource consumption and the associated damage to the climate and the environment. This gives rise to a direct obligation for the future. The G7 states must accept their responsibility to protect our environment and nature and agree concrete steps to handle our planet’s finite resources more carefully and sustainably.” She expressed confidence that the states would agree to “resolutely tackle the three existential crises of our time – the climate crisis, species extinction and the pollution crisis.”
In December 2022, the international community had agreed in Montreal on the Global Biodiversity Framework, an agreement for the global protection, sustainable use and restoration of nature. The meeting in Sapporo is in preparation for the G7 leaders’ summit in Hiroshima from 19 to 21 May.
