The Sixer Sense Podcast returns as the Philadelphia 76ers season is now officially over. The offseason is not even a day old and the Sixers made headline news firing head coach Doc Rivers. Even though this move is not overly surprising considering the Sixers have lost in the Conference Semifinals all three seasons with Rivers at the helm, I think it is worth noting this season’s failures are not all his fault. The Game 7 blowout loss to the Boston Celtics should fall on the shoulders of Joel Embiid and James Harden.
Lucas Johnson and Jonathan Geib discuss the firing of Doc Rivers and the reactions from the players and front office that have come as a result of this move. Embiid is reportedly shocked and it makes sense he is frustrated, as he had his three most productive seasons, including an MVP year this season under Rivers. On the other end of the spectrum, it seems factual that had Rivers remained head coach, the Sixers would have had no chance of re-signing Harden. This move feels like the front office, specifically Daryl Morey, placating Harden. Is this the right move for the Sixers? And what are the chances it causes a rift between Embiid and Harden?
Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting the following coaches will be considered for the Philadelphia 76ers’ head coaching vacancy.
All of the above coaches have head coaching experience except for Sam Cassell and three have won NBA Championships: Mike Budenholzer (Milwaukee Bucks), Nick Nurse (Toronto Raptors), and Frank Vogel (Los Angeles Lakers).
