LeBron James can only get sentimental about the career and unbroken bond he built with his good friend, Carmelo Anthony.
Right at his postgame presser following the L.A. Lakers’ West Finals exit, James revealed that he already knew that Anthony is set to announce his retirement from the recording that was made by the franchise which involved him.
“I kind of knew the announcement was going to happen. I shot the video a week ago that you guys seen today. People probably think I’m lying about that too, huh?,” James said, creating laughs within the entire room.
“It’s still a bittersweet obviously. That’s one of my best friends. When I got into this league, before I got to go this league we have so many memories when we’re in high school. From competing against each other to sitting outside of a hotel room at two or three o’clock in the morning on the steps of a hotel and just talking about our journey. I was 16, he was 17 and what we could possibly do going forward, what we could do possibly for our mothers, what we could possibly do for our families if we just continue to stay focused.”
Anthony, 39, announced his intent to walk away from the game of basketball this Monday, drawing overwhelming tributes and recognition from the whole basketball community.
A 10-time All-Star and a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, Anthony established himself as one of the most lethal scorers in history with his aggressive play and offensive focus – averaging 22.5 points in 44.7 percent shooting throughout 1,260 total games played in his illustrious career with six different teams.
He entered the NBA in 2003 alongside James with fellow peers Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. As such, the basketball superstar can only acknowledge the push they made to each other since their youth days to become the best basketball players that they can be.
“I believe we was a driving force for one another. We were locked at the hips since high school and then you guys saw that once we got into the NBA and he was always a motor factor for me,” he said.
James understands that he is the last man standing in the entire class of 2003.
With Anthony leaving, the Lakers star is fully reflective of the wars they’ve shared. They managed to play in two Olympic tournaments and shared the court as teammates last year in the purple and gold camp.
No matter what happens, James will be there to continue the grind with Anthony, as the future hall of famer is set to welcome a new chapter of different endeavors and focus in his life
“Definitely just a bittersweet moment today to see one of my great friends [to retire]. … It’s an amazing run, amazing accomplishment, an amazing career. We always will be joined at the hip no matter what.”
