Kaizer Chiefs had yet another season to forget, having finished the 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign in fifth place under coach Arthur Zwane.

Furthermore, Chiefs were not able to end their trophy drought which is now extending to eight seasons, despite reaching two semifinals.

At the end of the 2021/22 season, Chiefs made a massive clear out, getting rid of some experienced players, some of which had not been able to lead Amakhosi to any silverware during their lengthy stays at the club. It is expected that they will also undergo a similar exodus that could see several players forced through the exit door.

A lot of the players that were released by Chiefs were over 30-years-old with the majority never winning a trophy while at the club. Besides the Bernard Parker, the likes of Daniel Cardoso, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Leonardo Castro and Daniel Akpeyi had never touched any silverware during their careers at the club.

After that, Chiefs invested in players who were either younger or in their prime years, like Ashley du Preez, Zitha Kwinika, George Matlou, Dillon Solomons and Yusuf Maart to name but a few. However, even with those acquisitions, the optimism quickly died down as it became apparent that Amakhosi were not exactly improving.

Now, going into the 2023/24 season Kaizer Chiefs are believed to have already started their recruitment drive ahead, reportedly already signing three players. The club have already confirmed the signing of SuperSport United centre back Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, while also being thought to have signed Mduduzi Mdantsane and Given Msimango.
Chiefs need to sign quality players
Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi weighed in on the situation at his former club. The ex-goalkeeper gave an honest and frank assessment of the team, claiming that even if the club fired Zwane, they would not make any progress because half of the squad the coach is working with is not Chiefs material.
