Legendary Australian rock icon Jimmy Barnes will undergo open heart surgery today as he fights a bacterial infection in hospital.
The Cold Chisel frontman, who is 67 years old, was hospitalised last month with pneumonia.
In a statement on Twitter, Barnes revealed the bacterial infection had spread to his heart.
“Unfortunately I got some bad news yesterday….despite everyone’s best efforts the bacterial infection I’ve been battling over the last fortnight has apparently now spread to my heart,” Barnes wrote.
“It’s infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect, so l’ll be getting open heart surgery over the next few hours to clear out this infection and put in a clean valve.”
Barnes was due to headline the Rock the Boat 2023 cruise festival before he fell ill.
