Reforms In The Nigerian Mining Sector Could Become A Catalyst For Direct Foreign Investments

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the mining sector represents a critical catalyst for accelerating Nigeria’s economic diversification and growth. Historically reliant on crude oil, the Nigerian economy remains vulnerable to global price shocks. Capitalizing on the nation’s vast, untapped solid mineral deposits—including gold, limestone, lithium, zinc, and coal—through foreign partnerships offers a sustainable path toward structural transformation.

First, FDI injects vital financial capital and advanced technical expertise into the mining lifecycle. High-quality exploration, modern extraction methods, and advanced processing technologies require heavy upfront investments that domestic resources often cannot sustain. Foreign investors bring this necessary infrastructure, turning dormant geological data into active, high-yield mining operations.
Second, the influx of international mining companies directly stimulates employment. It creates thousands of direct jobs for geologists, engineers, and miners, alongside indirect opportunities in logistics, construction, and hospitality. This industrial activity facilitates crucial technology transfer, upskilling the local workforce to meet global standards.

Third, a thriving mining sector significantly expands Nigeria’s revenue base. It generates substantial foreign exchange through mineral exports and boosts government income via corporate taxes, royalties, and licensing fees. Furthermore, the infrastructure built by foreign firms—such as roads, railways, and power plants—benefits neighboring rural communities, driving integrated rural development.
By implementing transparent regulatory frameworks and offering attractive fiscal incentives, Nigeria can secure the high-value foreign investments needed to transform its mining sector into a primary engine of national prosperity.

In the light of those facts The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake, a couple of weeks ago engaged U.S. government agencies and investors in Washington D.C. to secure financing and technical support for Nigeria’s critical minerals sector. During the trip to Washington DC the Nigerian delegation also included Martins Imonite the Chief Executive Officer of The Solid Minerals Development Company (NSMDC), Martins Imonite was appointed by President Tinubu in March ,2025.

Martins Imonitie is a UK trained economist and banker by profession. He has over 25 years of work experience in government, banking and financial services across Nigeria, UK, and Australia. Prior to his appointment as MD/CEO Nigeria Solid Minerals Company, he spent 15 years in various senior relationship management roles with ANZ Bank in Australia. ANZ Bank is Australia’s leading lender to natural resources, energy, and infrastructure and one of the top five banks in the world across these sectors.

During their visit to Washington DC, USA the Nigerian delegation held high-level meetings with the U.S. National Security Council, EXIM Bank, and the Department of Energy to explore partnerships for diversifying the economy and accelerating project execution.
