India’s inability to produce a military‑grade turbofan engine for its fighter jets has created a strategic vulnerability, forcing reliance on foreign suppliers like the United States and France. This dependence undermines sovereignty and delays true aerospace autonomy, even as collaborations with Safran aim to bridge the gap.
India’s struggle to develop a high‑thrust turbofan engine has persisted for decades. The Kaveri project, despite significant investment, failed to deliver a reliable combat‑ready engine.
As a result, India’s frontline fighters such as the TEJAS MK‑1 and MK‑2 continue to depend on imported GE F404 and F414 engines. This reliance exposes India to supply chain disruptions, sanctions, and political leverage from external powers.
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program has intensified the urgency. A fifth‑generation stealth fighter cannot achieve its full potential without an indigenous propulsion system. India’s collaboration with France’s Safran is therefore seen as a critical step.
The proposed GTRE–Safran engine, in the 110–125 kilonewton thrust class, is designed to power the AMCA MK‑2 and future combat platforms. Safran has agreed to transfer advanced hot‑section technologies, including single‑crystal turbine blades, high‑temperature alloys, and cooling systems, areas where India has traditionally struggled.
The engine is expected to feature a variable‑geometry afterburner, enhancing thrust efficiency while reducing infrared signatures. This innovation will improve survivability against modern air defence systems and allow sustained supersonic flight without afterburner reliance.
The joint venture, valued at nearly ₹58,000 crores, promises India full intellectual property rights, eliminating export restrictions and ensuring long‑term upgrade control. Production is projected at 400–600 units, with scalability to 140 kilonewtons for future sixth‑generation fighters.
Facilities in Bangalore will be established for assembly, testing, and certification, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited as the production partner. This aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and integrate India into global supply chains.
Yet, despite progress, the arrangement remains at the negotiation stage, with Cabinet Committee on Security approval pending. It is not yet a signed production contract, meaning timelines remain vulnerable to bureaucratic delays.
The risks of borrowed thrust are stark. Imported engines not only drain foreign exchange but also limit operational sovereignty.
In times of geopolitical tension, suppliers can withhold spares or upgrades, crippling combat readiness. India’s reliance on American engines for Tejas and French engines for Rafale highlights this vulnerability. Without indigenous propulsion, India’s aerospace ambitions remain incomplete.
The challenge is compounded by the complexity of turbofan technology. Mastery requires advanced metallurgy, precision manufacturing, and digital engine controls.
Nations like the US, UK, France, and Russia took decades to perfect these systems. India’s late start has left it dependent, but the Safran partnership offers a chance to leapfrog technological barriers.
Parallel efforts by Reliance Industries and Rolls‑Royce to explore indigenous engine development for AMCA further diversify options.
However, without decisive investment and sustained political will, India risks repeating the Kaveri experience. The next decade will determine whether India achieves propulsion sovereignty or continues to rely on borrowed thrust.
