Baotou / parade square — The Type 100 that appeared on 3 September 2025 puts three crew in a hull capsule and the gun in an unmanned turret. That layout is why the vehicle is lighter than the Type 99 family, why a fire-support vehicle can share the same running gear, and why Baotou can rebuild Type 99Bs and cut Type 100 hulls inside the same industrial group.
This week’s CCTV tape of Type 99B live fire is useful only as a date stamp: the heavy line is already in the ammunition cycle. The Type 100 question is different — how far the new layout has moved from the parade into a workshop and a motor pool.
1. How the Unmanned Turret Changes the Vehicle
On a Type 99 / 99A / 99B, the commander and gunner sit under the turret ring. The turret has to be large enough for two people, their sights, autoloader access and the armor that protects them. Weight and volume follow the crew.
On the Type 100, parade imagery and official commentary show a different split. The three crew members sit side by side in the front of the hull, behind a thick glacis. They see the outside through optics and screens. The turret on top holds the gun, the autoloader and the sensors. If the turret is hit, the crew is not sitting in it. If the hull is hit, the ammunition and the gun are not all in the same box as the men.
That is why published weights for the Type 100 sit well below the Type 99A. Open estimates commonly fall in the 35–45 tonne band, depending on which armor modules are fitted; the 99A is generally put around 55 tonnes with a standard reactive-armor fit. Ten to twenty tonnes is the difference between “this bridge and this transporter will take it” and “only the heavy routes will.” It is not a magic number for airlift. Claims that one Y-20 can always carry two Type 100s are internet arithmetic, not a published PLA loading table.
2. Two Jobs for One Plant
Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group in Baotou has built Type 99 tanks for two decades. The 99B is the current heavy product: keep the 125 mm gun, keep the three-man turret, add sensors and protection so existing brigades do not have to scrap the chassis.
The Type 100 is the parallel job. A new hull, a new turret architecture, and a fire-support vehicle that shares the running gear so the plant is not nursing one orphan design. May 2026 training footage was treated in specialist reporting as the first official sign the Type 100 had entered a unit. Numbers in that coverage were still a low-rate first batch — a handful of hulls, not a replacement for the 99 fleet.
One factory family, two jobs: keep the current force current, and start the next layout before the old one is worn out.
3. What the Fire-Support Vehicle Is For
The parade also showed a Type 100 support combat vehicle with a different weapon station on a similar chassis. In formation terms that vehicle is how the lighter tank stays useful when the target is not another tank: drones, infantry in buildings, a position that needs a burst of cannon fire rather than a 125 mm hole.
Building both on one hull family is how you avoid a third unique spare-parts pile. Tracks, powerpack interfaces and the crew capsule can be shared; the factory changes the top. Whether that commonality survives series production is the thing to watch. Parade vehicles can share a hull. Brigade workshops only save money if the parts lists really match.
4. Mixing the Two Types Is the Hard Test
The 16 September CCTV serial — a 1,200-meter armor-piercing shot, moving fire, off-axis fire — says the 99B is in the ammunition cycle. It does not say how many Type 100s sit in the same brigade, or whether the two types will share a battalion.
A battalion that stocks 125 mm 99B ammunition and whatever the Type 100 gun and the support vehicle fire is two supply chains in one motor pool. A battalion that keeps 99Bs in one company and Type 100s in another is simpler, and slower to exploit the new layout. Official film has not settled that.
5. Limits
- Combat weight, gun-caliber details and airlift loads for the Type 100 remain estimates unless Beijing publishes them.
- Active-protection fit is widely reported; this article does not treat a specific interceptor shot as confirmed on camera this week.
- Production is still described as low-rate. Treating the Type 100 as already replacing the Type 96 / Type 99 force goes beyond the evidence.
The Type 100 is the new layout. The 99B is the current heavy fleet being brought up to a higher electronics and protection standard. Baotou is running both. How soon the lighter hull shows up in more than one brigade — and whether its parts list really matches the fire-support vehicle — is the next factory question.
