Tragedy struck the world of football on Tuesday as Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel passed away due to injuries sustained in a devastating collision with FC Andorra’s goalkeeper during a Spanish second division match.
At just 30 years old, de Miguel’s untimely death is a stark reminder of the fragility of athletes’ lives, echoing the unfortunate realities faced by several players who have died during or as a result of injuries incurred on the pitch.
AFP Sport has outlined five notable fatalities in the football community:
Marc-Vivien Foe, June 2003
Cameroonian midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe tragically passed away after suffering a heart attack during the Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon, France. Despite the prompt efforts of medical staff, he was unable to be revived and was declared dead at the age of 28 after 45 minutes of resuscitation attempts.
Foe’s death served as a catalyst for improvements in medical protocols, including better heart health screenings for players and enhanced training for club medical teams in CPR and the use of defibrillators.
Antonio Puerta, August 2007
Antonio Puerta, a Spanish international, collapsed during a La Liga match while playing for Sevilla against Getafe, ultimately succumbing to multiple organ failure three days later. His death, which arose from complications following prolonged cardiac arrest, occurred just months after he helped Sevilla clinch the UEFA Cup.
Legendary footballer Sergio Ramos honored Puerta’s memory with tattoos and dedicated jersey displays, highlighting the lasting impact of Puerta’s legacy within the sport.
Phil O’Donnell, December 2007
On an equally somber note, Phil O’Donnell, the captain of Motherwell, suffered a fatal heart failure during the closing moments of a Scottish Premier League match against Dundee United. The 35-year-old collapsed as he prepared to be substituted and could not be revived despite immediate medical intervention.
O’Donnell’s death reverberated throughout Scottish football, leading to postponed fixtures as the community mourned their loss. His manager praised him as a consummate professional and a role model for younger players.
Cristiano Junior, August 2009
Brazilian forward Cristiano Junior, at the time the highest-paid footballer in India, collapsed following a collision with the opposing goalkeeper during the Federation Cup final. He had just scored for his club Dempo when the incident occurred, leading to an immediate response from emergency personnel.
Junior was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital after experiencing cardiac arrest. His teammates expressed their devastation upon learning of his death shortly after the match concluded.
Juan Izquierdo, August 2024
The Uruguayan central defender Juan Izquierdo tragically succumbed to cardiac arrhythmia during a Copa Libertadores match with National against Sao Paulo FC. Five days after being hospitalized for the condition, he was declared dead from cardio respiratory arrest, a devastating loss that followed the birth of his second child just ten days earlier. His club described his passing as an “irreplaceable loss.”
These tragic incidents serve as poignant reminders of the risks faced by professional athletes and have sparked discussions on the importance of health monitoring and medical readiness in sports.
