King Charles III addressed the Houses of Parliament at Westminster Hall in London on Monday, September 12. The king expressed his gratitude for the messages of condolence he’d received from the respective speakers of the House of Lords and the Commons, John McFall and Lindsay Hoyle. He also remarked on the gifts from parliament given to his late mother on her silver, gold, diamond, and platinum jubilees. King Charles finished his speech by reflecting on his mother’s reign and how he would go on, saying: “While very young, her late majesty pledged herself to serve her country and her people and to maintain the precious principles of constitutional government which lie at the heart of our nation. This vow she kept with unsurpassed devotion. She set an example of selfless duty which, with God’s help, and your counsels, I am resolved faithfully to follow.” King Charles was due to travel to Edinburgh where he would accompany the queen’s coffin to St Giles’ Cathedral.
