Australia’s AACTAs are making the move to peak awards season on the Gold Coast, in recognition of Queensland’s increasing contribution to the Australian film industry.
The AACTAs (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards) will be presented in the Gold Coast in February 2024, aligning with international awards season to “(drive) Australia’s talented creative community further on the world stage,” AACTA said in a statement.

AACTA president and actor Russell Crowe welcomed the change, which will see the awards depart Sydney, where they’ve long been held.
“The Australian Film Institute (AFI) and more recently The Australian Academy (AACTA) have provided the platform that has seen this country’s contributions to the global film industry just keep growing and making household names out of Directors, Designers, Cinematographers, Post-production Houses, Visual Effect Artists, Writers, Producers, and of course, Actors,” Crowe said.
“We’re looking forward to broadcasting a memorable show and showcasing the Gold Coast and the Great state of Queensland.”
He continued: “This is going to be an event that really shakes things up and makes people have a lot of fun on our industry and in this state.”
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was also delighted by the change, which will bring the awards to her home state.
“Our screen industry keeps going from strength to strength as we build our international reputation as the place to film world-class cinema and television content,” she said in a statement.
“Queensland is a production paradise offering the complete package, with film-friendly locations, highly skilled crew, world-class facilities and competitive incentives.

Many successful productions have been filmed in Queensland, including Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which won 11 AACTA awards, including Best Film and Best Direction in Film, as well as 9 BAFTA and 8 Oscar nominations.
