Archaeologists have discovered several blocks of white cheese dating back to the 26th dynasty of ancient Egypt (664-525 B.C.) in the famous Saqqara necropolis at Giza.
The country’s Ministry of Antiquities said in a statement that the find was made during the first round of excavations of the sixth season of the mission.
Several earthen cheese vessels inscribed with Demotic script, an ancient Egyptian script, were discovered, as well as a number of other containers that are expected to be uncovered in the coming days.
The Saqqara necropolis houses one of Egypt’s largest collections of relics. Since 2018, various missions in the area have uncovered a number of high-profile finds, including a cache of more than 100 sarcophagi about which a 2020 Netflix documentary was made.
