A video has gone viral on social media, grabbing the attention of many users. The video, posted by a content creator, shows an interaction between a mother and daughter in the context of joking with her brother after calling each other names, and only she was held accountable because only “he’s allowed to do that”. Although the video was intended for jokes, it shed light on a deeper issue in many Egyptian households.
While it’s important to realize that the video may have been scripted and used for relatable content, it triggered social media users, mainly girls, who found a familiar pattern in their own lives. Many expressed their concern over the mother’s response to her daughter, as she seemed to take the brother’s side and place blame, even when he was in the wrong.
Many pointed out that the mother was gaslighting her daughter, dismissing her feelings. It is important to remember that mothers offer the best intentions, hoping for their kids to grow up and achieve greatness. However, there are examples when their actions can cloud their judgment, leading their sons to make poor decisions and fostering a belief that they are always right.
It is not our intention to pass judgment based on a video. Regardless, the conversation shown was disappointing to see. It serves as a reminder that we need to reflect on the influence parents have on their children’s growth, particularly when it comes to having both sons and daughters in the same household.
Men who were raised by their mothers as the favorites have a greater chance of growing up to be entitled and have no respect for boundaries. They are raised in a household where they get to mistreat their sisters and see them have no right to voice their concerns which creates an advantage for them to get away with anything they want.
Parents are the whole reason their kids develop a personality, but they also develop flaws. Establishing a middle ground should be done from the start, because favoritism can be damaging to confidence, and self-esteem and not only will it cause damage to the neglected sibling, it will backlash on the favorite sibling too.
