Staying with federal politics, and deputy Greens leader Mehreen Faruqi says her party will move to formally censure One Nation leader Pauline Hanson when federal parliament resumes on Monday, September 26.
Last week, Hanson told the NSW senator to “pack your bags and piss off back to Pakistan”. The comment was made after Faruqi wrote on social media that while the Queen’s friends and family have her condolences, she can’t mourn the leader of an empire “built on stolen lives, land and wealth of colonised peoples”.
Hanson’s comments remain on Twitter. Faruqi is reportedly considering a complaint to the Human Rights Commission.
“People who look like me have been told to go back to where they come from at one point or another,” the Greens senator says.
“I’ve copped it more times than I can count. But the hurt and sorrow it causes never lessens.
“When parliament sits on the 26th of September, the Greens will move to censure Pauline Hanson. If parliament is to be a safe workplace, we need to send a clear message that this hostility to migrants and people of colour will not be tolerated.”
