Bill Hader lost movie theatre job for ruining ‘Titanic’ ending

Hell hath no fury like a movie theatre worker scorned by a bunch of sorority girls on their way to see Titanic.

Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader has revealed he was once fired from his job at a movie theatre after he decided to wreck the ending of Titanic for a bunch of college girls who mocked his appearance.

“I got fired from a movie theatre for ruining the end of Titanic,” Hader said this week on Netflix’s Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney. “I was working in a movie theatre, and Titanic hadn’t come out yet, and a sorority had bought out the movie theatre and they were in the doorway and I was going, ‘Hey, guys. Can you guys move?’ They were making fun of me. They said I looked like Charles Manson. Which I kinda did. I had a little bowtie on and cummerbund, and I was like, ‘Hey guys, please move.’ And they were like, ‘No.’”

So as they made their way into the auditorium, the Emmy winner decided to have some fun by spoiling the movie’s conclusion.

“When they went in, as I tore the tickets, I was like, ‘Enjoy the movie. The boat sinks at the end. Leo (DiCaprio) dies,’” he said. “And they were like, ‘No, he doesn’t.’ I go, ‘Yeah, you think he’s asleep. But he’s frozen.’ And that showed them.”

The Barry star, who was 19 years old at the time, said that his antics led to him being fired from his job.

“The (manager) came down smiling, and he was like, ‘Hey, Bill. I have to fire you.’ He loved it. Couldn’t look me in the eye, though.”

Fans of James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic have debated the ending to Titanic for more than 25 years.

Ever since the film’s debut in 1997, moviegoers have argued about the conclusion, with many feeling that Rose (Kate Winslet) could have shoved over and made room for Jack (DiCaprio) on the floating door, thus saving his life (personally, I have always believed that there was plenty of space on that makeshift raft).

Back in 2022, Cameron conducted a “scientific study” to prove two people could not have survived.

“We have done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and drive a stake through its heart once and for all,” Cameron told Postmedia during an interview to promote Avatar: The Way of Water.

“We have since done a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie,” Cameron said. “We took two stunt people who were the same body mass of Kate and Leo and we put sensors all over them and inside them and we put them in ice water and we tested to see whether they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was, there was no way they both could have survived. Only one could survive.”

Cameron also said that he didn’t regret killing off Jack.

“He needed to die. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a movie about love and sacrifice and mortality,” Cameron said. “The love is measured by the sacrifice. Now, maybe I didn’t do it in a way that everybody agrees with. But Jack had to die. It’s that simple.”
