This year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup is being hosted in the Oceanic areas of Australia and New Zealand; the competition began on July 20 and will conclude on August 20. Banyana Banyana was placed in Group G, alongside Argentina, Italy, and Sweden.

Banyana’s sloppy World Cup start
Banyana played their first match on Sunday, July 23, and lost 2- 1 to Sweden. They let the opposition back into the game against Sweden after leading by a goal. In their second match, Banyana drew two goals apiece against Argentina on July 28.
Against Argentina, Banyana opened the scoring in the 30th minute through Linda Motlhalo before Thembi Kgatlana scored what looked like a ‘security’ goal in the 66th minute. South Africa allowed the opposition back into the game, as they did in their first encounter against Sweden, and the South Americans scored two goals in six minutes to deprive Banyana of their first World Cup triumph.
