The Jays (63-46) look to snap a four-game losing streak in the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles (50-58) on Wednesday afternoon.
Jose Berrios (7-4) takes the mound against Orioles RHP Dean Kremer (8-7) in what is the fourth game in three days between the two AL East rivals.
Berrios (3.83 ERA) will be tasked with containing an Orioles lineup that has scored 30 runs and homered eight times in the first three games of the series. Baltimore is slugging at .412 this season, good for 10th-best in the majors.
Today’s game concludes a stretch of 14 games in 13 days, with the Jays getting their first day off since the All-Star break, and it may be exactly what the doctor ordered.
George Springer remains out after a pitching scare in the series opener. Outfielder Joey Loperfido will hit leadoff after injuring his thumb sliding into home on Tuesday. Catcher Ali Sanchez will get the call behind the plate with Alejandro Kirk still dealing with a concussion.
This is the Blue Jays’ worst stretch since late April, during which they lost five in a row and also dropped eight of nine games. Toronto also suffered a sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros in this period, something they will look to avoid against the Orioles.
It’ll also be Toronto’s final contest before the MLB trade deadline on Thursday, and subsequently its final chance to get back in the win column before any potential trades.
