The NRL Integrity Unit are seeking answers from the South Sydney Rabbitohs after Brandon Smith was questioned by police at Coolangatta Airport on Saturday afternoon.
Smith had arrived on the Gold Coast with teammates ahead of the Rabbitohs’ Sunday clash with the Titans when Queensland police intercepted the 29-year old at the airport, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
However, Smith was released without charge and will be able to face the Titans. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing.
It remains unclear what the interest was in the Rabbitohs’ high-profile recruit, with Queensland Police releasing a brief statement on Sunday.
“Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport. The male was later released without charge. Police have no further information to provide,” the statement reads.
The Sydney Morning Herald have reported that the NRL Integrity Unit have asked for an explanation from the Rabbitohs.
The clash with the Titans will be Smith’s 150th in the NRL spread over three clubs, and just his second for the Rabbitohs after a mid-season switch from the Sydney Roosters.
Smith made his club debut in Round 18, but suffered a knee injury that has kept him sidelined since.
