The prices of smartphones – of all electronics, really – are going up, so this might be a bad time to upgrade. However, this also means that old devices are retaining more value and Apple has recognized that as the company just updated the trade-in valuations on its US site.

Many older iPhones are now worth a bit more than they were just a few days ago (we got the old numbers from the Wayback Machine). Some are just $10 more, but there are plenty of models that went up by $25, some even $35.

After launching the Nord CE 4 Lite in 2024, OnePlus is jumping directly to the Nord CE 6 Lite this year. The device has been the subject of a few rumors in the past, some revealing its design and others its possible specifications.

In that regard, a Geekbench listing has now revealed the chipset of the OnePlus Nord CE 6 Lite. The smartphone appeared in the benchmark under the model number CPH2943 and is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 chip.

The latter is confirmed by the core setup, consisting of four CPU cores running at 2.60GHz and four at 2.0GHz. Graphics are handled by the Mali-G615 MC2 GPU. Similarly, the device tested features 8GB of RAM and runs Android 16 out of the box.

With this setup, the OnePlus Nord CE 6 Lite managed to score 1,068 points in single-core and 2,953 points in multi-core tests.

As for other hardware specifications, the Nord CE 6 Lite is expected to feature a 6.7-inch LCD panel with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. That’s a noticeable downgrade from the Nord CE 4 Lite, which offered an AMOLED panel with a peak brightness of 2,100 nits.

The camera setup could be fairly simple as well. It is said to feature a 50MP main sensor paired with a secondary lens on the back, along with a 16MP front camera.

Keeping it up will be a large 7,000mAh battery. Its predecessor pairs a 5,110mAh cell with 80W fast charging. So, hopefully, the Nord CE 6 Lite will support similar charging speeds for quick top-ups.

Moreover, the 6GB + 128GB variant is said to cost under ₹23,000. However, these are just leaks, so take the details with a pinch of salt.

The OnePlus Nord CE 6 Lite is expected to launch alongside the OnePlus Nord CE 6 in India next month.

Apple is working on a new iPhone security feature that can automatically lock the device when it detects that it has been snatched from the user’s hand. Here are the details.

Apple goes after iPhone snatchers

Many of us know the feeling: one second you’re looking at your iPhone, and the next, you’re staring at an empty hand. By the time you realize what happened, whoever took the device is already out of reach.

Over the years, Apple has greatly improved iPhone anti-theft protections, with features such as Find My, Activation Lock, and Stolen Device Protection.

However, many of those protections can be rendered nearly useless if a thief grabs the device while it is still unlocked.

Apple does include time-based security delays to prevent major Apple ID changes, but the reality is that a thief can still cause significant damage once they get their hands on an unlocked iPhone.

That is why Apple is working on a new feature that automatically locks the iPhone when the system detects it has been snatched from the user’s hand, similar to Android’s Theft Detection Lock.

These systems will rely on several signals, including the iPhone’s accelerometer, to detect when the device has been snatched from the user’s hand. Once the snatching is confirmed, it will automatically lock the iPhone.

To further determine whether the iPhone may have been taken from its owner, the feature will also observe the distance from a paired Apple Watch.

Additionally, once fully implemented and enabled, the feature will take into account the same rules that apply to Stolen Device Protection: whether the iPhone is connected to a familiar WiFi network, and whether it is at a familiar location, such as home or work.

If those conditions suggest the iPhone has been taken from its owner at an unfamiliar place, in addition to automatically locking the device, the feature will restrict access to the same areas protected by Stolen Device Protection.

There are no details on when these features will be announced, but code seen by 9to5Mac makes it clear they are under active development. Hopefully, they will come sooner rather than later.

A troublesome issue is ruining the Fitbit Air’s recent launch, as users report problems right out of the box.

A redditor on the Fitbit subreddit posted happily about receiving their Fitbit Air pre-order this weekend; however, it was quickly (via Android Authority). Here’s the thing: the reports about the Fitbit Air’s issues weren’t highlighted by the OP (original poster), but rather those responding. It seems that some users are receiving their Fitbit Airs earlier than anticipated by Google, and their device isn’t pairing with their Android phone.

Usually, the Chinese models come out earlier than their global counterparts, but Honor released the Honor 600 series the other way around. First came the Honor 600 and 600 Pro for the global market, and now we get to see the Chinese versions.

However, the differences aren’t that many. One of the main disparities between the global and the Chinese Honor 600 series is battery capacity. The regular Honor 600 from China comes with a huge 8,600 mAh battery, while the international unit caps at 7,000 mAh.

The same goes for the Pro model – China gets an 8,000 mAh pack, while the rest of the world settles for a 7,000 mAh unit.

On the other hand, the Chinese Honor 600 Pro isn’t as powerful as its international sibling. It relies on a Dimensity 8550 chipset, while the global Pro flexes Snapdragon 8 Elite muscles.

There are no other changes to the two devices. All phones share the same 6.57-inch 120Hz OLED screen, 80W fast charging over a cable and 50W wireless for the Pros. The Chinese models also retain the camera hardware – a 200MP main camera joined by a 12MP ultrawide unit, with the Pros getting an additional 50MP, 3.5x telephoto camera. And the Honor 600 proper gets to keep its Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chipset.

The 2nm process node is the most advanced, cutting-edge node in the industry, and it’s none other than TSMC leading the next-generation wave of advanced chips. The Taiwanese chip giant has managed to achieve yields favorable for mass-producing 2nm wafers, but unfortunately, that is not enough to meet demand for AI chips and mobile SoCs, forcing smartphone brands to opt for silicon downgrades later this year.

According to a reliable Chinese tipster, Digital Chat Station, multiple smartphone brands will offer fully equipped SoCs only in their top-of-the-line “Ultra” or “Pro Max” models because of rising memory costs and the chip crisis. While the tipster doesn’t explicitly mention “TSMC,” it doesn’t take long to realize where the fingers are pointing to.

While the complexities of mass-producing advanced wafers at a larger scale pose a major challenge for the Taiwanese chip giant, AI and mobile are competing for the same advanced nodes, only worsening the supply crunch. According to industry reports, much of N2 capacity through 2026 is already effectively sold out, with Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia, and AMD locking in large allocations. Apple alone is reported to have more than half of the initial N2 capacity.

Samsung is the most prominent alternative to TSMC, but it is struggling even worse in bringing up its 2nm GAA yields. That leaves smartphone brands with limited supply, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see high-end chips being reserved for top-end models. This explains why Qualcomm is rumored to launch Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro as part of its dual-chip launch strategy. Apple is also said to follow a similar approach with its A20 and A20 Pro.

Even MediaTek is reportedly adopting the same strategy, offering the Dimensity 9600 and Dimensity 9600 Pro. The more affordable SoC will be offered to less premium phones, and the more expensive silicon will be reserved for top-end phones. We can also expect smartphone prices to rise, with the DRAM crisis among the main culprits.

While my preferred way to use an iPhone is with no case or screen protector, I’m actually enjoying both on iPhone 17 Pro and can recommend them. They’re inexpensive enough to try without committing for a year or more.

Five years ago, Apple introduced Ceramic Shield glass to the iPhone screen. It touted four times better drop performance with the promise of fewer shattered iPhone screens.

I haven’t shattered an iPhone screen yet, but I consistently pick up two or three deep scratches after a year of use.

This year’s Ceramic Shield 2 front cover promises three times better scratch resistance.

Apple also says the front panel now has improved anti-glare to reduce reflections, but the difference is nowhere near what nano texture provides on iPad Pro and MacBook Pro.

Make your iPhone 17 Pro display more matte

For those reasons, I’m using a product that I tried and liked a few years ago. It’s the Mothca matte glass screen protector.

The product isn’t perfect. I’d much prefer a nano texture iPhone without the slight rainbow effect and drop in brightness.

Still, I recommend trying these if you’re curious how a matte display looks on iPhone, especially at $9 or $14 for a single or double pack. The product feels more premium than its price would suggest.

A minimal case for just-in-case situations

Then there’s the matter of the iPhone case. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on one since I don’t plan to use it daily.

I usually throw a case on before an activity like kayaking or mounting the iPhone to motorcycle handlebars. I’m also concerned about chipping the orange aluminum finish from the sharp angles on the camera bump.

I like black but find the pairing with cosmic orange to be a bit too Halloween-themed for year-round usage. Instead, I decided something more gray could pair nicely with orange and create a sort of futuristic space suit look.

I’m pretty happy with the case I stumbled upon in a retail store a few days ago.

It’s a Spigen case called Thin Fit that comes in black, gunmetal, or abyss green. I’m using the gray version, and it fits the look I was imagining.

It’s priced at $39.99 from Spigen, but Amazon lists the same case for $34.99.

I noticed that a lot of cheaper cases don’t include MagSafe, which can limit the effectiveness of battery packs and magnetic mounts.

The Spigen Thin Fit includes both MagSafe and a capacitive Camera Control cover instead of just a cutout.

I like that this case covers the full camera “mountain range” since that’s an area that concerns me with durability.

It also creates a cool “orange circles” look that looks a lot like the Digital Crown on the space black Apple Watch Ultra.

Cosmic orange is also visible around the button covers, not just the bottom port, creating the orange-accented gray look I wanted.

Another benefit is that it does not show the orange aluminum border around the display. The border is fine when it’s just part of the phone without a case, but I can see it being distracting when just a thin orange border is showing between a dark case and dark screen.

The Mothca screen protector will save you from deep scratches, and the matte texture is awesome if you like anti-glare screens. The Spigen Thin Fit case has a metallic look and a smooth feel that doesn’t add too much bulk.

Motorola phone deals have landed just in time for the holiday weekend, and this one’s perfect for anyone who likes to have a cheap phone with a stylus. This year, Best Buy’s Memorial Day Sale has cut $210 off the price of the 2024 Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G, representing over half off and bringing it down to just $190.

Despite being a 2024 release, this Moto G Stylus features a really pretty display, a powerful suite of cameras, and impressive performance, especially given the price point.

The 2024 Moto G Stylus 5G is a cheaper phone with a stylus than many of the premium-level and current-gen Samsung devices. It comes with a 6.7-inch, 120Hz OLED display that’s a delight to use, a speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and decent cameras despite being a generation old. It also sports wireless charging capabilities, up to 30 hours of battery life, and up to 30W fast charging.

Again, it’s a pretty good pick for just $190, especially for casual users who just want a good user experience and a stylus.

This week the theme is “freebies” as several manufacturers pair phones with additional gadgets to try and draw in a crowd.

We start with the OnePlus 15R, which comes with a free OnePlus Watch 3 43mm. And this is in addition to a €150 discount from its launch price.

Next up, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII is on pre-order until June 19 – yeah, it will be a while. And there’s no discount either, the Mark 8 really does cost €1,500 for a 12/256GB phone. At least you get a pair of the excellent Sony WH-1000XM6 for free.

Or you can just buy the XM6 over-ear headphones on their own, they are €80 off at the moment. Also consider the older (and thus cheaper) Sony WH-1000XM5. Sony unveiled the WH-1000X The ColleXion (pronounced “collection”) this week, but those are full price.

Moving on, Motorola Germany is selling the Moto Razr Fold, the company’s first book-style foldable, at a hefty €2,000. If you get it before May 31, you can grab a free Moto Watch and free Moto Buds Loop. Amazon has the Razr Fold on pre-order until May 31 and isn’t offering any freebies, but it has set the price €200 lower.

Next up, the Motorola Razr 70 Ultra is paired with the Moto Buds Loop and a Moto Tag (these two devices together are valued at €190).

The Motorola Razr 70+ has the same bundle as the Ultra – Moto Buds Loop and a Moto Tag. This is from Motorola Germany. Amazon also has the phone listed, but with a super late launch date (July 1, no, not June, July) and, worse, it’s the same price as on Motorola.com except without any of the freebies.

Finally, the vanilla Motorola Razr 70 is available through both Motorola and Amazon. One of the colorways on Amazon is €70 off at the moment, but with only few units remaining, it will probably sell out before you see this.

The Poco F8 Ultra is one of the most affordable phones with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It also boasts a triple 50MP camera, which includes a large 1/1.31” sensor in the main module and a 5x/115mm periscope.

The Poco F8 Pro is no slouch with its Snapdragon 8 Elite (the previous generation) and it has a 50+50+8MP camera – this is with a smaller 1/1.55” sensor in the main and a shorter 2.5x/60mm lens on the telephoto module. After reading that, if you think the F8 Pro is the way to go, consider the Poco X8 Pro Max. It’s a larger phone (6.83”, 8,500mAh vs. 6.59”, 6,210mAh) with the Dimensity 9500s chipset (a slightly reworked Dimensity 9400+).

The Poco X8 Pro has a 6.59” display and a 6,500mAh battery – unlike the similarly sized F8 Pro, this is a mid-range device with a Dimensity 8500 Ultra chipset and no telephoto camera. The good news is that the price reflects that – the 512GB model in particular buys you a lot of memory for not a lot of money.

Xiaomi has introduced the Mijia Smart Range Hood 3C Side Suction, a new addition to its growing smart kitchen lineup.
