Charlton Athletic are closing in on two deals with Coventry City’s Todd Kane and striker Macauley Bonne both set to sign for the League One club.
The versatile Kane, 29, is a loan switch until the end of the season. Bonne, who was in negotiations with the Addicks on deadline day in the summer, is a free agent after his QPR contract was cancelled.
Kane is out of contract at the end of the campaign.
He had been sent to train with the development squad in pre-season ahead of a transfer which failed to materialise.
Kane has made nine Championship appearances for the Sky Blues with manager Mark Robins claiming a couple of weeks back that the door was not shut on his involvement.
“There’s an opportunity for everyone here,” he told Coventry Live. “It’s like the chicken and egg. I am looking for performance levels, they are looking for game time. But if they are given game time they have got to win games of football and the levels have got to be high enough to warrant that.
“Whoever you are, whatever player it is, has got a spot there and anyone can turn any situation around, however difficult it may look from the outside. They’ll get opportunities when they deserve opportunities and then they’ll keep the shirt if they are doing the business.”
Kane is undergoing his medical tonight.
The South London Press was told that the increasingly fractious relationship between Bonne and QPR was a major factor in the collapse of his previous potential return to SE7.
In the end the former Leyton Orient frontman, signed by Charlton after their League One play-off final win as a long-term project, opted to stay and see out his final year.
The two parties came to a severance agreement earlier in the January window.
Despite being seen as a low-cost and low-risk signing by Charlton – with the worst case scenario being that the club recouped the nominal sum paid – Bonne ended up scoring 11 goals in the Championship season.
Lee Bowyer was never sold on the frontman and did not put up a fight to retain him when QPR bid in 2020.
Bonne also hit double figures – 12 – during a season-long loan with Ipswich Town last season.
