Clippers Haven’t Decided On Starting Point Guard

The LA Clippers are heading into the 2022-23 NBA season with some massive expectations. After injuries ruined last season for them, they are poised to bounce back as one of the favorites to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy at the end of the season.

It is hard to pick against the Clippers, who have their All-Star duo of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George back in the lineup healthy and ready to go. Around them is arguably the deepest, most talented roster in the NBA.

Tyronn Lue will have his hands full figuring out the minute distributions as the Clippers are at least two, sometimes three players deep at some positions. If a player is underperforming, Lue will have the ability to turn to someone else to find a spark.

Right now, it looks as if there are four starting spots locked down. Leonard and George will be handling two of them with Ivica Zubac likely the starting center. Marcus Morris Sr. has started in the preseason, but the fifth spot has yet to be decided.

As shared by Law Murray, who covers the Clippers for The Athletic, Lue has confirmed that the starting point guard will be either Reggie Jackson or John Wall. It will come down to fit and Lue is undecided currently about which veteran will be the starting point guard.

Jackson is the incumbent, starting 75 games for the team last season. Wall signed with the Clippers after agreeing to a buyout with the Houston Rockets this offseason. He spent the entire 2021-22 season sidelined as the Rockets sought out a trade partner for him.

Wall has not played much basketball in the last five seasons. He has appeared in only 113 regular season games since the start of the 2017-18 campaign as he has dealt with numerous serious injuries. In addition to last season, Wall also missed the entire 2019-20 season.

This looks like a situation in which Lue could play the hot hand early on, mixing and matching until someone solidifies themselves in the role. Of the two, Jackson has more experience coming off the bench, which could factor into Lue’s decision.
