CPD union pushes to remove 22 disciplinary cases from police board

The union representing rank-and-file Chicago police officers is pushing to remove more than 20 pending disciplinary cases from the Chicago Police Board’s docket and instead have them decided behind closed doors — a change that would upend more than 60 years of precedent in the city’s police accountability apparatus.

The effort by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 comes as the largest Chicago police union and the city continue to negotiate a new contract.

After five days of testimony featuring multiple layers of political intrigue, the perjury trial of Tim Mapes on Wednesday finally got to the rather simple allegations at the heart of the case: His alleged lies to a federal grand jury investigating his former boss, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Jismary Alejandra Barboza González, who would have turned 4 next week, died Aug. 10 while on a chartered bus, part of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s program begun last year of sending migrants crossing into the state to Democratic-led cities across the country.

“This is a crisis that could have a long-term negative impact on Indiana’s economy and negative repercussions throughout our society. We have no time to waste, and together, we must urgently work to improve reading outcomes for Indiana students.”
