Traffic is backing up on the main route into Raglan after a car crash brought down power lines on State Highway 23.

In a statement, police said a car collided with a power pole around 5pm at Whatawhata near Heddon Road.

No serious injuries were sustained as a result of the crash but power lines have fallen across both sides of the road.

Police say traffic is backing up in both directions and the road is likely to be blocked for some time.

Motorists are urged to delay travel or take an alternative route.
